The NZ Police Cyber Security Centre is seeking three Cyber Security Advisors to strengthen the organisations cyber security capability. These roles present an opportunity to contribute directly to the safety reliability and trustworthiness of Police technology that supports frontline services and the wider public.

  • 1 role will sit within the Cyber Security Engineering team
  • 2 roles will sit within the Cyber Security Services team with a focus on Security Risk Assessment (SRA) and Certification & Accreditation (C&A)

These roles are at an intermediate level suited to professionals who have progressed beyond purely operational or analyst positions and are ready to apply strong technical fundamentals risk-based thinking and advisory capability across complex enterprise environments.

You will work alongside specialists and engage closely with technical operational and business stakeholders to uplift security maturity and embed good security practice into everyday decision-making across Police.

Cyber Security Advisor Engineering (1 role)

These roles sit within the Cyber Security Engineering team which forms the technical foundation of Polices cyber security capability. You will support the design assessment and continuous improvement of security controls across enterprise platforms applications and infrastructure.

You will work under the guidance of specialists while taking responsibility for discrete security assessment and design activities. You will build your capability by working across complex environments helping to uplift security maturity and embed good security practice in everyday technology decisionmaking.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Assisting with security assessments of applications platforms and infrastructure to identify control gaps and technical risks
  • Supporting the design and implementation of security controls using approved architecture patterns standards and best practices
  • Contributing to the development and maintenance of cyber security standards patterns and technical guidance
  • Participating in vulnerability management activities including triage analysis and supporting remediation planning
  • Working closely with architects engineers and delivery teams to embed security requirements into system design and change initiatives
  • Collaborating with Cyber Security Operations and Services teams to ensure controls are practical testable and fit for purpose
  • Identifying security gaps and technical debt and contributing ideas for incremental and sustainable improvement
  • Communicating security risks and recommendations clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders

Cyber Security Advisor Services (SRA / C&A) (2 roles)

These role sits within the Cyber Security Services team with a primary focus on Security Risk Assessments (SRA) and Certification & Accreditation (C&A) activities.

You will be responsible for conducting security risk assessments and supporting certification and accreditation processes across a diverse range of Police technology solutions. The role involves direct engagement with technical product owners ICT specialists and Police staff to ensure systems meet NZ Police risk management and assurance requirements.

Key Accountabilities

  • Conducting complex security risk assessment activities across business application infrastructure and cloud-based solutions
  • Supporting and delivering certification and accreditation requirements for projects and operational systems
  • Understanding cyber security and broader technology risks and recommending appropriate proportionate controls
  • Working with a wide range of stakeholders to achieve positive risk-informed outcomes
  • Applying cyber security frameworks principles and strategies in a practical and pragmatic way
  • Managing multiple work items at various stages with strong time management and prioritisation skills
  • Contributing innovative and continuous improvement ideas to uplift assurance and risk management practices
  • Clearly communicating risk controls and assurance outcomes to technical and non-technical audiences

Essential Experience and Attributes

  • A solid foundation in computing or information technology including practical understanding of operating systems networking and applications
  • Experience applying cyber security principles in real-world environments (e.g. projects operations security assurance or advisory roles)
  • Working knowledge of common cyber security controls architecture concepts and/or risk management practices
  • Experience in cyber security ICT assurance or technical risk-related roles
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to balance security risk operational needs and delivery constraints
  • Confidence engaging with technical teams and stakeholders with support from colleagues where required
  • A collaborative learning-focused mindset with a genuine interest in improving security maturity over time
  • Well-developed verbal and written communication skills

Desirable

  • Relevant industry certifications (e.g. CISSP GIAC CompTIA Security OSCP) and/or relevant tertiary qualifications
  • Understanding of cyber security control frameworks their rationale and practical application
  • Familiarity with NZ Police risk management frameworks
  • Demonstrated leadership initiative and a commitment to quality and continuous improvement

  • For both Constabulary & Police Employees:
    • Agree to enrol in a leadership programme at the advertised level at a future date or
    • Have qualified under CEP or a previous Career Progression Framework at the level you are applying for.

To be eligible for this role you may be asked to obtain and maintain a TOP SECRET national security clearance.

The minimum criteria for this level of national security clearance is:

NZ Citizen who has resided continuously in NZ for the last 10 years or:

  • A Permanent Resident who has resided continuously in NZ for the last 10 years or
  • A citizen of or has resided continuously in one or more of the following countries for the last 10 years: Australia Canada United Kingdom or United States of America and has a background that can be verified by the NZSIS.
