Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience):
- High school diploma or its equivalent.
- A minimum of 2 years Accounting experience.
- Experience and knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel Word Outlook) and operating general office equipment (copier printer/scanner etc.) and filing.
- Equivalent combinations of related education and experience may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Preferred:
Associate degree in accounting business or related field.

About this Opportunity!
The Montana Department of Livestock is looking for an Accounting Technician to join the Team in the Central Services Division. The Centralized Services Division provides management services to the entire department. These services include; budgeting accounting personnel management information technology payroll processing purchasing general services and supplies and the management of the Milk Control Bureau and the Livestock Loss Reduction and Mitigation Board.
Position Overview:
The Accounting Technician is responsible for recording financial transactions updating statements and checking financial records for accuracy. Duties include but are not limited to the proper allocation of expenditures the entry of accounts payable/ receivable data vendor file maintenance audits state credit cards and enters expense reimbursements. Additionally this position is responsible for technical accounting duties such as interpreting data from the agency database and spreadsheets and has audit responsibilities for the income of various funding types. As a member of a team this position provides back-up for other accounting functions within the agency as needed. The Accounting Technician is located within the Centralized Services Division and reports directly to the Accounting Manager.
Essential Functions (Major Duties or Responsibilities):
- This position will have a primary responsibility for performing accounts payable functions for the unit. All Accounting Techs however will perform both payable and/or receivable duties.
- Processes financial transactions such as travel vouchers and/or travel advance requests.
- Checks for accuracy in figures postings and reports researching or auditing as needed. Includes working with employees and manager to receive need information and to make proper corrections.
- Answers general questions as well as those related to specific accounts.
- Track financial documents such as receipts bills forms and other records includes proper records management of all related documentation.
- Perform routine reconciliations.
- Creates adjusting journal entries to ledgers and journals; Assists with fiscal year-end journal entries as assigned.
- Identifies and corrects routine posting errors.
- Classifies records and summarizes numerical and financial data.
- Prepares bank deposits; Includes assigning proper revenue codes for all deposit types.
Provides back up for other Accountant Accounting Technician positions. This includes wire transfers from cooperative agreements diagnostic laboratory A/R and reconciliation processing payroll and other assigned functions. This position may also be required to be the back-up for the mail room and perform related duties as needed.
Physical and Environmental Demands:
The individual in this position will be performing job duties in a typical office environment. Work may need to work at a computer for 8 or more hours at a time. Minimal travel is required and telework may be approved on a case-by-case basis.

- Accounting and internal control policies and procedures; specifically related to reconciling accounts accounts payable and accounts receivable processes;
- Automated accounting systems as well as Microsoft Office products with proven Excel abilities;
