DEPARTMENT SUMMARY:
Cardiopulmonary Perfusionist provides extracorporeal support to patients during heart surgery and management of the heart lung machine for patients at Monroe Carell Jr Childrens Hospital in the population for which cardiac surgery or circulatory support is required.. The perfusionist is independently responsible for a wide range of mechanical life support systems. This position is based in cardiac surgery department but due to the nature of the work provides clinical service throughout the institution on neonatal infant pediatric and adolescents. The technical complexity of this position requires the incumbent to have an understanding of cardiac congenital pediatrics pulmonary vascular and orthotopic transplantation procedures. Life support via cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) must be administered to a varied patient population safely and efficiently. The perfusionist conducts CPB independently working closely with the surgeons anesthesiologist and nursing staff in order to tailor the perfusion to the needs of each patient.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Pre-operative review of patient medical records and set up operation and maintenance of the cardiopulmonary bypass machine extracorporeal circuitry & ancillary equipment required during cardiopulmonary bypass and standby procedures as ordered by attending surgeon(s).
Intra-operative monitoring as necessary to interpret and/or manipulate perfusion indices within clearly defined protocol parameters including but not limited to prime components thermal regulation anticoagulation patient hematocrit blood flow rates oxygen supply and consumption vascular resistance and blood gas management as outlined in the AmSECT Perfusion Scope of Practice.
Completion of clinical documentation EMR documentation and pre-bypass checklist per established protocol.
Maintains competence with routine and non-routine procedures and equipment.
Functions in the clinical area according to established professional standards-of-care and within clinical scope of practice as outlined by American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion American Society of Extracorporeal Technology and American Academy of Cardiovascular Perfusion.

TECHNICAL CAPABILITIES
Equipment Maintenance (Novice): Possesses sufficient fundamental proficiency to successfully demonstrate the ability to maintain equipment products or systems in practical applications of moderate difficulty. Assures that parts inventory is sufficient.
Medical Terminology & Documentation (Novice): Possesses sufficient fundamental proficiency to successfully demonstrate medical terminology and documentation in practical applications of moderate difficulty.
Procedures Knowledge (Novice): Possesses sufficient fundamental proficiency to successfully demonstrate procedures knowledge in practical applications of moderate difficulty. Generally works under the direction of others while accomplishing assignments.
Cardiopulmonary Perfusion (Novice): Possesses sufficient fundamental proficiency to successfully demonstrate cardiopulmonary perfusion knowledge in practical applications of moderate difficulty. Generally works under the direction of others while accomplishing assignments.
