ARC Productization Engineer
At General Motors our ARC (Advanced Robotics Center) team is redefining how robotics enable safer more flexible and more efficient manufacturing. We are developing and deploying nextgeneration robotic solutions that move materials automate complex tasks and unlock new levels of throughput and quality in our plants.
TheARC Productization Engineerserves as the critical link between ARC Product Development and downstream Product Execution and Deployment this role you will ensure that ARCdeveloped robotics solutions aremanufacturingreadyvalidated for proofofconcept (PoC) testing andprepared for scalable deploymentacross GM plants. Working primarily in the plant environment you will identify and close readiness gaps drive integration and validation activities and enable a smooth handoff from development to execution.
The Role
Acting on behalf of the ARC Product Development organization the ARC Productization Engineer operates at the intersection ofproduct engineeringmanufacturing operations anddeployment. You will:
- Represent ARC at manufacturing plants serving as the onsite technical owner for ARC products during PoC pilot and early deployment.
- Translate plant needs constraints and lessons learned into clear requirements and feedback for ARC Product Development.
- Build and maintainproduct readiness viewsthat describe what is required to move from prototype to robust repeatable deployment.
This is a highly handson onsite role that combines technical depth structured problem solving and strong crossfunctional communication.
What Youll Do
- Independently representARC Product Developmentat GM manufacturing plants to plan and execute ARC productproofofconceptandpilot deployments.
- Leadproduct readiness assessments identifying gaps in:
- Design maturity and robustness
- Manufacturability and serviceability
- Documentation and standard work
- Safety compliance and operating procedures
- Process readiness in the plant (material flow layout staffing training)
- Supportonsite integration validation and early deploymentactivities in Flint MI and/or Spring Hill TN including:
- System bringup and functional checkout
- Integration with plant material flow safety systems and IT/OT infrastructure
- Execution of PoC test plans and data collection
- Develop clear structuredhandoff packagesfor Product Execution and Deployment teams including:
- Readiness status and open issues
- Operating constraints and known limitations
- Standard work operating procedures and training content
- Lessons learned and recommendations for next deployments
- Collaborate crossfunctionally withProduct Engineering Manufacturing Engineering Global Supply Chain (GSC) Industrial Engineering Safety Quality Program Management and plant leadership.
- Capturelessons learnedfrom plant deployments and systematically feed insights back into ARC Product Development (requirements updates design changes validation plans documentation).
- Contribute tostandardized deployment playbooksfor ARC products enabling plant and regional teams to deploy with predictable outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
1. Product Readiness & Validation
- Assess product readiness from prototype through PoC and early pilot with clear criteria for:
- Functional performance in plant conditions
- Safety and compliance with GM and regulatory requirements
- Operability maintainability and usability for plant teams
- Support the creation and execution ofPoC and pilot validation plans ensuring they are:
- Structured to generate actionable learnings (not just demonstrations)
- Traceable to requirements from ARC Product Development and plant stakeholders
- Repeatable across multiple plants and product configurations
- Document findings risks and mitigation plans and track closure with ARC and plant teams.
2. Plant Integration & Deployment Support
- Plan and coordinate onsite activities required to deploy ARC products into live manufacturing environments including:
- Site readiness reviews (layout infrastructure IT/OT material flow)
- Installation commissioning and integration of ARC systems
- Interfaces with plant safety systems material handling and operations
- Work handson with plant personnel to stabilize early deployments debug issues and align on operational envelopes and constraints.
- Ensure that ARC products are introduced in a way thatminimizes disruption to plant operationswhile maximizing learning value.
3. Handoff to Execution & Scaling
- Build and maintaindeploymentready documentation including:
- System overviews and interface definitions
- Standard operating procedures (SOPs) and work instructions
- Maintenance and troubleshooting guides
- Training materials for operators maintenance and engineering
- Define and communicate clearhandoff criteriafrom Product Development to Product Execution and Deployment teams.
- Support the transition from oneoff PoCs torepeatable deployment playbooksthat can be applied across multiple plants and programs.
4. CrossFunctional Collaboration & Continuous Improvement
- Serve as theonsite SMEfor ARC products translating between:
- ARC engineers and plant teams
- Suppliers and GM stakeholders
- Safety Quality Manufacturing Engineering and Operations
- Capture and prioritizecontinuous improvement opportunitiesacross design validation documentation and deployment processes.
- Help refine ARCs manufacturing readiness and launch frameworks based on realworld experience in GM plants.
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
- Bachelors degree in Engineering(Industrial Manufacturing Mechanical Electrical or related field).
- 3 years of experienceworking in or directly supportingmanufacturing plant environments.
- Working knowledge ofGlobal Supply Chain (GSC) Industrial Engineering or Manufacturing Engineeringprocesses and how they interact with plant operations.
- Ability to workonsite in Flint MI or Spring Hill TNto support product readiness integration and proofofconcept activities.
- Strong skills intechnical documentation communication and crossfunctional collaboration with the ability to align diverse stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability toquickly learn new technology understand system behavior in the field and become thesubject matter expert (SME)at a deployment site.
- Proven capability to work independently in a plant environment manage daytoday priorities and escalate issues appropriately.
What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
- Experience supportingnew product introduction (NPI) pilot programs orproofofconcept deploymentsin manufacturing.
- Background inrobotics automation or advanced manufacturing systems especially in production environments.
- Familiarity withmanufacturing readiness validation or launch frameworks including how to define and measure readiness criteria.
- Experience developinghandoff documentation and playbooksbetween engineering deployment and plant operations teams.
- Handson experience withautonomous mobile robots (AMRs) industrial robots or similar mechatronic systems.
- Comfort operating inambiguous fastmoving environments balancing speed of learning with the rigor needed for safety and quality.
Work Location & Travel
- This role isonsite with the majority of time spent in GM manufacturing plants:
- One position willtravel frequently to Spring Hillor be based in theSpring Hill TNarea.
- One position will primarily supportFlint Assembly (Flint MI).
- Around90% of work timeis expected to be spentonsite at assembly plants with potential travel to both Flint and Spring Hill and occasional travel to other GM sites as needed.
