About the team

We build and operate Stripes Event Infrastructurethe reliable low-latency backbone that captures routes and persists billions of events daily. We design resilient scalable systems for real-time ingestion filtering transformation and high-throughput delivery to downstream consumers. We prioritize observability backpressure control and graceful degradation to keep payments and platform features running under any load. By automating operations and iterating on capacity and cost optimizations we enable product teams to build on a predictable event-streaming foundation.

What youll do

As an Engineering Manager in the infrastructure organization youre expected to see problems others dont and rally people to independently create solutions. Youll move beyond day-to-day management to act as an industry leader effectively advocating for your organizations mission values and impact

Architect the Org and CultureDesign and scale a high-leverage org structure. Youll define what Elite Engineering looks like setting the bar for craftsmanship and operational rigor serving as a blueprint for Stripe infrastructure

Vision and StrategyDefine the scope vision and goals for your organization with little or no guidance from your manager. Youll anticipate industry trends and use them to influence Stripes long-range plans setting direction on a multi-year timeframe for Stripes online storage layer

Drive Operational ExcellenceYoull instill a culture of rigorous thinking and meticulous craftsmanship ensuring our infrastructure remains proactive and resilient as Stripes business demands evolve

Bridge Engineering and BusinessYoull collaborate with cross-functional leaders to align deep engineering needs with global business growth forecasts

Build the Future TeamProactively invest in the development of the organization and its people at all levels. Youll obsess over talent hiring and coaching other managers to elevate the skills of the leadership team

Minimum requirements

Proven LeadershipMinimum 5 years of experience in a technical engineering management role overseeing strategic projects

Systems ExpertiseA deep technical background in distributed systems and experience operating Tier0 infrastructure at massive scale

Product MindsetAbility to bridge deep engineering needs with global business growth forecasts and product strategy specifically building abstractions that empower thousands of other developers

Strategic NavigatorExperience managing through ambiguity and making critical trade-offs between reliability efficiency and long-term architectural health

Curiosity and HumilityA deep curiosity about the nuts-and-bolts of the business (e.g. global money movement) combined with the humility to continue learning and growing as a leader

CommunicationStrong written and verbal communication skills

Preferred qualifications

Scale and InfrastructureSuccessfully shipped and operated critical infrastructure (database internals or related field) with significant responsibility over funds or critical data

Strategic AmbiguityAbility to navigate complex high-impact work where you must define your own scope and vision

Cross-Functional InfluenceA track record of getting other teams on board with your vision to support execution in a way that benefits the broader company
