The Physical Assessment Worker is a temporary student position that supports the evaluation and preservation of microfilm collections. Working under established guidelines the student will assess the physical condition and housing of microfilm materials identify potential preservation concerns and assist in implementing basic stabilization measures. This role provides hands-on experience with archival materials and preservation practices.
Key Responsibilities:
Assess whether microfilm is housed in archival-quality boxes
Insert Kodak Molecular Sieves into appropriately housed microfilm boxes as directed
Identify microfilm composition (polyester vs. acetate) using date and physical indicators
Apply handling protocols treating uncertain materials as acetate when in doubt
Examine microfilm for signs of deterioration (eg signs of vinegar syndrome)
Set aside materials requiring further review based on condition concerns
Follow established workflows and document assessment outcomes as needed
Expected Salary:
$14.25/hr
Required Qualifications:
Once trained will be able to work independently to follow structured workflows and document findings clearly and with minimal supervision.
Must be punctual reliable detail-oriented and work well with others.
Basic computer skills and familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite (Word Excel etc) is also required.
Preferred:
Experience working with library materials specifically with archives preservation or special collections work
Ability to handle fragile materials with care and consistency
Basic organizational and time management skills
Willingness to learn and apply preservation guidelines
