You will inspire students to master the science of the stove from understanding the functional properties of ingredients to developing the high-level culinary skills required for the modern hospitality industry.

The Food Technology Department

The Food Technology department is a vibrant and high-profile area of the school housed in a modern professional-standard catering suite. Our curriculum bridges the gap between traditional home economics and contemporary food science focusing on the why as much as the how of cooking.

You will join a collaborative team supported by a dedicated Food Technician who ensures that lessons are well-resourced and safe. We pride ourselves on a curriculum that is both culturally diverse and academically rigorous with a high uptake at GCSE and a successful vocational pathway in Hospitality and Catering. We maintain strong links with local food producers and regional culinary colleges providing our students with a clear view of the diverse career paths available in the food sector.


Main Duties and Responsibilities

As a Food Technology Teacher you will be responsible for equipping students with essential life skills and technical expertise. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Instructional Excellence: Planning and delivering high-quality practical-led lessons across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4. You will prepare students for GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition or Level 1/2 Vocational awards.

  • Culinary Mastery: Teaching a wide range of practical skills from basic knife work and hygiene to complex techniques such as pastry making sauce reduction and decorative finishes.

  • Nutritional Science: Delivering engaging theoretical lessons on the chemical properties of food (such as protein denaturation caramelization and aeration) and the principles of a balanced diet.

  • Health and Safety Leadership: Maintaining the highest standards of food hygiene and classroom safety. You will ensure all students understand the importance of cross-contamination prevention and the safe use of industrial kitchen equipment.

  • Sustainability and Ethics: Encouraging students to explore global food issues including food waste reduction seasonal sourcing and the environmental impact of various diets.

  • Extracurricular Engagement: Leading initiatives such as Future Chef competitions bake-offs or community catering projects that showcase the departments talent to the wider Dudley community.


Person Specification

The successful candidate will be a creative and highly organized subject specialist with a genuine passion for food and nutrition. You should possess:

  • Academic and Professional Credentials: A degree in Food Technology Nutrition or a related field and Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). We welcome applications from both experienced practitioners and Early Career Teachers (ECTs).

  • Technical Proficiency: A high level of personal culinary skill and a deep understanding of the scientific principles behind food preparation.

  • Pedagogical Skill: The ability to manage a busy practical classroom effectively ensuring all students are engaged safe and making progress during fast-paced cooking sessions.

  • Communication and Rapport: The ability to inspire students of all backgrounds fostering a love for food and a respect for the disciplined environment of a professional kitchen.

  • Drive for Excellence: A proactive approach to your own professional development and a commitment to keeping the curriculum relevant to the modern food industry.
