Main Duties and Responsibilities

As an English Teacher you will be the guardian of literacy and critical thinking for our students. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Instructional Excellence: Planning and delivering high-quality engaging lessons across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 (GCSE English Language and Literature). You will have the opportunity to teach A-Level classes guiding students through complex literary criticism and linguistic analysis.

  • Curriculum Craftsmanship: Contributing to a knowledge-rich curriculum. We encourage our teachers to bring their own literary passions into the classroom whether that is a love for Shakespearean tragedy Post-Colonial poetry or the nuances of political rhetoric.

  • Analytical Mastery: Teaching students how to deconstruct texts with precision. You will move them beyond basic comprehension to a deep understanding of authorial intent structural choices and historical context.

  • Writing Development: Fostering a love for writing in all its forms. You will help students master everything from formal persuasive essays to imaginative creative writing ensuring they can communicate with clarity and flair.

  • Data-Informed Progress: Utilizing the schools tracking systems to ensure no student falls behind. You will provide the kind of detailed high-level feedback that helps students refine their arguments and elevate their grade boundaries.

  • Extracurricular Literacy: Leading initiatives that celebrate the written and spoken word such as a Debate Club Creative Writing workshops or organizing theatre trips to the Lowry or the Royal Exchange.


Person Specification

The successful candidate will be an articulate and enthusiastic subject specialist who believes in the transformative power of English. You should possess:

  • Academic and Professional Credentials: A degree in English Literature Language or a related field and Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). We warmly welcome applications from both experienced practitioners and ambitious Early Career Teachers (ECTs).

  • Subject Authority: A deep love for reading and a sophisticated understanding of English grammar and literary theory.

  • Pedagogical Skill: The ability to make complex texts accessible and exciting for a diverse range of learners using a variety of strategies to engage even the most reluctant readers.

  • Communication: Exceptional verbal and written communication skills with the ability to inspire students and build strong relationships with parents and colleagues.
