Job Description Summary

The major gifts writer serves chiefly as a proposal writer for the MUSC Foundation with additional responsibilities outlined below. This role is part of the Foundations development team and reports to the senior principal-initiatives writer. Responsibilities include gathering information and using this information to write and produce compelling proposals in support of fundraising initiatives; writing content demonstrating the impacts of philanthropy on MUSC and the people it serves; and writing senior-level donor correspondences. The writer must have excellent written communication skills be able to meet demanding deadlines and be able to articulate and present medical and research content that is relevant engaging and compelling to external audiences with the result of securing donor support.

Job Description

Location: This position will work primarily onsite in Downtown Charleston.

Responsibilities

35% Proposal writing Researching gathering information/data and interviewing key stakeholders for the purpose of identifying philanthropic priorities across the Medical University of South Carolina. Writing both templated and customized proposals for philanthropic support. Must be able to translate complex research and medical terms into easy-to-understand dialogue. Should be able to re-state and re-package proposal content in different formats/deliverables (formal proposals web copy PowerPoint etc.).

30%Impact reporting Writing content (i.e. newsletter/e-newsletter articles emails etc.) that demonstrate the impact of philanthropy on the universitys mission and lives of the people served by that mission.

25% General correspondence Writing letters and reports to promote and maintain positive relationships with key donors and other stakeholders.

10% Other duties as assigned.

Education and Training

    • Bachelors degree in marketing English journalism or related field. A minimum of 4 years experience in journalism fundraising philanthropy or related fields preferably in academic medicine and/or public health.

    • Proven work experience writing philanthropic proposals newsletter/magazine articles e-newsletters personal correspondences and similar communication vehicles.

    • Experience with Canva/Adobe and PowerPoint preferred

    • Results-oriented and flexible to work in a fast-paced environment.

    • Proven track record of owning outcomes and optimizing for engagement and conversion metrics.

    • Strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work optimally across internal and external organizations.

    • Possess outstanding problem-solving analytical and research skills.

    • Keen eye for details and an obsession for accuracy

    • Ability to gather and organize information.

    • Ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure.

    • Outstanding analytical writing and editing skills.

    • Ability to navigate ASANA or similar project-management tools

Additional Job Description

Physical Requirements:

Continuous requirements are to work indoors; possess good finger dexterity; maintain tactile sensory functions; maintain 20/40 vision corrected in one eye or with both eyes; maintain good peripheral vision capabilities; and maintain hearing acuity with correction.

Frequent requirements are to perform job functions while standing/upright sitting and walking/mobile; fully use both hands and arms; perform repetitive motions with hands wrists elbows and shoulders; perform gross motor functions with frequent fine motor movements; reach in all directions; see and recognize objects close at hand and at a distance; match or discriminate between colors; determine distance and relationship between objects including depth perception; and hear and/or understand whispered conversations at a distance of 3 feet.

Infrequent requirements are to work outdoors in all weather and temperature extremes; work in confined/cramped spaces and dusty areas; kneel and squat to perform job functions; perform pinching operations; lift and carry 15 lbs. unassisted; lift objects up to 15 lbs. from floor level to a height of 36 inches unassisted; and push or pull objects up to 15 lbs. unassisted.
