Are you a creative dynamic and people-focused senior journalist looking for a new leadership challenge in a busy daily newsroom

CBC Edmonton is looking for an executive producer to lead our news operations.

Reporting to the managing editor the executive producer will lead our teams who gather and produce daily and enterprise news content across platforms including digital video and this role you will work alongside the executive producer of programming and engagement to steer our journalism and our people into an increasingly digital future and help us reach a new generation of Albertans.

As such we are looking for someone who is a champion both of great journalistic content and of the people behind it. Could this be you

As the executive producer of news you will oversee daily news coverage decisions and be the go-to person on journalistic policy and judgment. You will have experience leading teams covering all aspects of news from breaking events to investigative projects and will have a keen knowledge of legal risk management. You will ensure that all our work adheres to CBCs Journalistic Standards and Practices and that it upholds our core principles of accuracy fairness balance impartiality and integrity.

You will be creative and innovative working with the rest of the leadership team to develop new forms of storytelling on all platforms. Youll approach your work with an open mind and a genuine curiosity and youll be comfortable challenging assumptions and seeking out a variety of perspectives to better reflect our audiences and their stories.

You will be a strategic thinker: you are able to set direction and delegate effectively but you arent afraid to roll up your sleeves and do the hard work. You understand that daily news can be a flat-out sprint to deadline with myriad complex decisions to make along the way so organizational skills are key. And you know how to balance the daily demands with longer-term projects and strategy.

As a leader you are naturally collaborative skilled at navigating conflict and change breaking down silos and championing team success. You are a mentor at heart and are deeply invested in developing a representative and inclusive culture.

This role requires full-time on-site presence.

Your responsibilities:

  • Oversee CBC Edmonton news operations focusing on daily enterprise and investigative journalism across our news platforms (digital social streaming radio and TV)
  • Provide editorial oversight to ensure our content is original relevant and impactful and elevates a range of voices and perspectives.
  • Make editorial coverage decisions that align with CBCs Journalistic Standards and Practices
  • Provide guidance on legal risk management.
  • Monitor audience and industry trends and develop ideas and approaches for future opportunities on existing and emerging platforms.
  • Coordinate and oversee live and breaking news specials.
  • Oversee staffing and scheduling decisions.
  • Identify and develop emerging talent within and outside CBC Edmonton and actively support efforts to improve the recruitment of candidates from underrepresented groups.
  • Coordinate training and development opportunities for staff providing feedback coaching and opportunities for growth

Your profile:

  • University degree in journalism or equivalent with a minimum of seven years of journalism experience.
  • Demonstrated experience leading teams in a fast-paced daily multi-platform news environment.
  • Excellent journalistic and critical thinking skills including a deep knowledge of the legal and ethical issues related to journalism.
  • Superior communication interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • A strategic thinker with a proven track record of executing on a vision.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise both quick editorial judgment and long-term planning.
  • A high-energy leader with a positive team-first attitude and the ability to motivate and coach teams encourage creativity and embrace experimentation.
  • Demonstrated skills in talent recognition development and retention.
  • Experience and commitment to developing content strategies to feature new voices and perspectives and to connect with new younger and more diverse audiences.
  • A strong proven connection to the communities we serve in Edmonton and northern Alberta and a deep and nuanced understanding and appreciation of diverse perspectives and lived experiences.
  • Strong people management skills with a keen desire to live and promote the values of diversity and an inclusive and respectful work culture.
  • Ability and willingness to work flexible hours as required.
  • Possession of a valid drivers license as well as a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/Radio-Canadas insurance company.
