Key job responsibilities
- Design and implement scalable software solutions that calculate taxes accurately and efficiently across Amazons global operations handling millions of service requests per minute
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand business requirements and translate them into technical solutions that meet tax compliance standards worldwide
- Develop test and deploy high-quality distributed system software using software engineering best practices and modern development methodologies
- Participate in the full software development lifecycle including design reviews code reviews documentation testing and operational support of production systems
- Contribute to system reliability and performance by monitoring production metrics identifying optimization opportunities and implementing improvements to ensure our services meet demanding scale and accuracy requirements


A day in the life
As a Software Development Engineer on our team youll engage with the full software development lifecyclefrom initial design conversations through deployment and operations. You might start your day reviewing a proposal to optimize tax calculation performance then move into code review with teammates discussing architectural approaches to handle increased transaction volume. Youll write and test code in our Java Linux and Oracle-based environment collaborate with engineers across different Amazon business units to understand their tax requirements and participate in on-call rotations to ensure our services remain reliable. Your work directly influences how quickly and accurately customers receive tax information at checkout and youll see the real-world impact of your contributions through our monitoring and metrics.

- 3 years of non-internship professional software development experience
- 2 years of non-internship design or architecture (design patterns reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
- Experience programming with at least one software programming language

- 3 years of full software development life cycle including coding standards code reviews source control management build processes testing and operations experience
- Bachelors degree in computer science or equivalent
