Summary
The long-term substitute elementary physical education teacher is responsible for providing a developmentally appropriate comprehensive and inclusive physical education program for students in grades K-5 and Adaptive Physical Education services for students K-12. The successful candidate will foster a positive safe and optimal learning environment that encourages physical literacy healthy decision-making and a lifelong joy of movement. This role requires the ability to follow existing curriculum guidelines manage student behavior effectively and collaborate with staff to support student outcomes.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Plan prepare and deliver daily lessons and activities that align with the established elementary physical education curriculum and state frameworks.
Create and maintain a safe effective and developmentally appropriate learning environment within the gymnasium and/or other assigned areas.
Manage student behavior promote self-discipline and ensure a positive and productive classroom climate in accordance with school and district policies.
Differentiate instruction to address the individual needs and abilities of all students including those with disabilities.
Assess student progress towards learning objectives and expectations collecting data to document progress and aid in planning.
Communicate effectively with parents administrators and other professional staff regarding student progress and behavior.
Cooperate with other staff members (e.g. special education teachers guidance counselors) to identify student needs and collaborate on solutions.
Attend and participate in faculty meetings and professional development activities as required for a long-term assignment.
Maintain accurate student records including attendance and grades.
Follow all building and district standards policies and procedures including emergency protocols.
Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students equipment and facilities.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelors Degree.
A valid license in Physical Education from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Demonstrated experience with grade-level learning principles.
Ability to perform essential physical duties including frequently kneeling stooping bending crouching standing and occasionally lifting/carrying equipment up to 25 pounds.
Consistent reliable and punctual attendance is an essential function of the job.
Desired Qualifications (Preference):
Demonstrated experience and/or certification in Adapted Physical Education (APE) or working with students with diverse physical abilities and special needs is strongly preferred.
Familiarity with IEP (Individualized Education Program) processes and the ability to develop/implement effective physical education lessons tailored to individual student goals.
Coursework in physical health and general education topics such as exercise philosophy kinesiology and human development.
CPR and First Aid certification.
