Heritage Park is Canadas largest living history museum and offers visitors a chance to experience life in Western Canada from the 1860s to the early 1950s. The park features historical buildings costumed interpreters working antiques and various exhibits that provide insight into the regions past.
Job Overview:
Under the direction of the Selkirk Chef de Cuisine and Culinary leadership team the Selkirk Junior Sous Chef supports the day-to-day kitchen operations contributing to the preparation and execution of menu items while assisting in maintaining quality consistency and efficiency across service.
This role supports kitchen leadership in coordinating service ensuring standards are upheld and providing guidance to team members. The Selkirk Junior Sous Chef is expected to demonstrate strong culinary skills operational awareness and the ability to support a high-performing kitchen environment.
Responsibilities:
Culinary Execution & Service Support
- Execute menu items in alignment with Selkirks Chef de Cuisines vision ensuring consistency in quality taste and presentation
- Support the preparation and rollout of seasonal menu updates including recipe adherence and station readiness
- Maintain standardized recipes and portioning to ensure consistency and cost control
Kitchen Operations & Organization
- Support day-to-day kitchen operations ensuring smooth service flow and timely execution of dishes
- Assist in coordinating kitchen activities across stations to align with service demands and priorities
- Communicate effectively with front-of-house teams to ensure accurate order execution timely service and guest satisfaction
Food & Labour Cost
- Follow established food cost controls through proper portioning prep planning and waste reduction practices
- Support efficient use of labour during prep and service by maintaining organization and readiness
- Identify opportunities to improve efficiency and communicate recommendations to Selkirks Chef de Cuisine
Team Leadership & Development
- Support the training onboarding and day-to-day direction of casual and seasonal culinary team members
- Reinforce kitchen standards expectations and procedures set by Selkirks Chef de Cuisine
- Provide guidance and coaching during service to ensure team effectiveness and consistency
Food Safety & Compliance
- Ensure all food handling and kitchen practices comply with AHS guidelines Heritage Park policies and food safety standards
- Maintain a clean organized and sanitary kitchen environment at all times
- Monitor equipment and report any maintenance or safety concerns promptly
Collaboration & Cross-Functional Support
- Work closely with front-of-house teams to support guest experience including accommodating dietary needs and special requests
- Provide support across other kitchen areas or culinary operations as needed maintaining flexibility in a dynamic environment
- Communicate clearly with supervisors and team members to support smooth daily operations
Organizational Excellence and Wellbeing
- Contribute to inspiring and immersive experiences at the Park by engaging in Heritage Park initiatives that align with our mission and vision ensuring authenticity in our historical setting and stories.

Required Qualifications:
- Completion of Secondary school required; post-secondary education in culinary arts or hospitality is an asset
- Cooks trade certification or actively working toward certification is required
- Minimum 23 years of experience in a commercial kitchen environment
- Demonstrated ability to support kitchen operations and maintain quality standards in a fast-paced environment
- Strong working knowledge of food safety sanitation and kitchen procedures
- Proven ability to work collaboratively and support team members during service
- Effective communication and organizational skills
- All successful candidates (over the age of 18) willbe requiredto complete a Police Information Check as a condition of employment. A criminal record will not automatically disqualify an applicant; any informationdisclosedwill be assessed confidentially on a case-by-case basisin accordance withAlberta human rights legislation considering relevance to the role and our commitment toequitableand inclusive hiring practices.
Special Clothing and Equipment:
- Heritage Park will provide Food Services white uniforms which must be worn. Personal tools are to be supplied by the individual.
Special Working Conditions: - The position will be exposed to hot temperatures in a kitchen setting.
- This position is physically demanding and the incumbent must have the ability to lift heavy items and stand for long periods.
Hours of Work:
- The standard hours for this position are 40 hours per week;
- Regular holiday evening and weekend work may be required
