Position Overview

As a member of the Health and Safety Team the Superintendent Health and Safety will report to the Head of Health Safety Environment and Communities and work a 2X2 schedule at the Ekati Diamond Mine. The Superintendent Health and Safety will be responsible for leading the safety culture at the Ekati Diamond Mine and is expected to interact frequently in the field and with all departments and levels of the organization.

Job Duties/Responsibilities

  • Be a safety leader by promoting and demonstrating safe work practices in all tasks at Ekati;
  • Lead programs in occupational health risk and safety for surface and underground mining areas and for all levels of the organization to ensure the achievement of the company safety standards and objectives;
  • Promote the reporting of all Health and Safety incidents and non-conformances and lead/facilitate in the identification of root causes corrective and preventative actions using tools such as 5 Whys and the root cause analysis method (TapRooT);
  • Perform risk assessments as well as coach and mentor leaders in this process;
  • Monitor compliance to applicable Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) regulations;
  • Help develop manage and maintain budgets and consultant programs;
  • Supervise mentor and develop Health and Safety Team of Advisors Physician Assistants and Staff;
  • Capable of making decisions which have broad impact to the organization in complex and evolving situations;
  • Develop implement and maintain policies programs and procedures for a safe work environment;
  • Ensure emergency response teams are trained prepared and responsive in the event of an emergency;
  • Act as resource on the Occupational Health and Safety Committee (OHSC);
  • Develop and promote strategies for improving safety culture and awareness across the operation;
  • Demonstrate safety leadership to the workforce through visible direction and guidance

Education/Experience

  • Certification in Health and Safety or a combination of current Health and Safety related courses and direct safety professional experience in OHS;
  • Ability to qualify for or possess Certified Health and Safety Consultant (CHSC) Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) certification;
  • 10 years mining or industry experience preferably in a remote setting;
  • Experience with root cause analysis method TapRooT certification is considered an asset;
  • Strong all-round expertise in the area of occupational health safety management systems and corporate governance;
  • Preference for Emergency Response and/or Emergency Medical Services certifications;
  • Demonstrated high level of energy self-motivation and strong organizational skills;
  • Strong communication skills both oral and written with both internal and external contacts and the ability to work with all levels of the organization;
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite of products (MS Work Excel PowerPoint etc.);
  • Leadership skills to act as a role model promoting a positive influence on the work of others through demonstration of technical and business expertise;
  • Physically able to climb stairs walk long distances and lift items up to 40 lbs. at periodic intervals.

Additional Information

The Company provides travel to and from the Ekati mine site out of Calgary Yellowknife and other northern fly points.
