The Coordinator Development Services coordinates the day-to-day delivery of Councils development assessment and building services ensuring development applications and building matters are processed efficiently consistently and in accordance with legislative requirements.
The role provides leadership technical guidance and supervision to planning and building staff while supporting the Manager Development & Regulatory in the effective operation of development services under thePlanning Development and Infrastructure Act 2016and thePlanning and Design Code.
The coordinator also undertakes planning assessments and provides technical support to ensure high-quality outcomes for the community and compliance with statutory requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership and Team Coordination
- Coordinate the daily work of planning and building staff to ensure efficient processing of applications and compliance with statutory timeframes.
- Supervise and provide guidance to staff including mentoring cadets and trainees.
- Monitor team performance and workloads assisting staff to resolve operational challenges.
- Foster a collaborative customer-focused and high-performing team culture.
Development Assessment and Building Services
- Coordinate and support the assessment and determination of development applications in accordance with relevant legislation and policy.
- Undertake planning assessments of development applications including preparation of planning reports and recommendations in accordance with thePlanning and Design Codeand relevant legislation.
- Review and provide feedback on staff reports and documentation to ensure accuracy and compliance.
- Ensure processing of applications meets statutory requirements and internal procedures.
- Support consistent interpretation and application of the Planning and Design Code.
Customer Service and Stakeholder Engagement
- Respond to complex enquiries from applicants consultants builders and the public.
- Participate in meetings with applicants consultants and other stakeholders regarding development proposals.
- Support staff in delivering high-quality professional customer service and advice.
Governance and Compliance
- Support compliance
with the requirements of thePlanning Development and Infrastructure Act 2016and associated regulations through consistent development assessment practices and internal procedures. - Maintain accurate records and reporting within Councils development systems.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of development services systems and processes.
Operational Support and Service Improvement
- Assist the Manager Development & Regulatory inimplementing improvements to development services processes and systems.
- Monitor application workloads and contribute tooperational reporting and service performance monitoring.
- Support initiatives to improve customer service and efficiency within development assessment processes.
- Contribute to preparation of reports briefing notes and operational planning documents as required.
Qualifications Experience Knowledge & Skills
Essential
- Degree qualification in
Urban and Regional Planning or a related discipline. - Demonstrated experience in development assessment services within local government or a related field.
- Knowledge of the South Australian planning and development legislative framework.
- Experience supervising or coordinating a small team.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to interpret legislation planning policy and technical documentation.
- Well-developed organisational and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage competing priorities and statutory timeframes.
- Working knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite
- High level of attention to detail
- Demonstrate high levels of integrity and professionalism
- Current Class C drivers license
Highly regarded but not essential
- Knowledge of local government development systems and processes.
- Experience preparing reports for Council or committees.
- Experience working with thePlanSA Portal.
- Membership of a relevant professional body e.g. Planning Institute of Australia.
