The St Vincents Hospital Geriatric Unit isseekingmotivated and dynamic advanced trainees to further their education within our organisation. The St Vincents Geriatric Service covers a geographical area bounded by the City of Sydney and the localities covered by Woollahra and Waverley Councils extending from the City and Redfern areas through to Bondi and Vaucluse.

The linked services as part of the training experience include the St Vincents Hospital Geriatric Unit and Medical Admissions Unit War Memorial and Sacred Heart Rehabilitation units as well as the St Vincents Community Health service Geriatric Flying Squad based at War Memorial Hospital in the Home and Transitional Aged Care Programs. One advanced Trainee is also seconded on a rotational basis to Wagga Wagga Base Hospital. We have a broad range of educational opportunities.

The training experience is covered by 5 positions 2 inpatient and 2 community based and 1 position at Wagga Wagga Base Hospital.

Position 1Medical Admissions Unit Advanced Trainee with responsibilities to manage the patient careflowand quality performance of the MAU with consultant led supervision.

Position 2Consultation andOrthogeriatricsService. This role covers consultations to our service with a rotating consultant involvement. There is a strong focus onOrthogeriatricsand the development of similar surgical geriatric services is in progress.

Position 3SVH Community Advanced Trainee involved in case conferencing rounds hospital wide recruitment and management of patients in HITH medical liaison with TACP and Community services domiciliaryvisitsand the development of outreach into Residential Aged Care Facilities.

Position 4WMH Community Geriatric Flying Squad Advanced Trainee assessing patients in the community for acute and subacute geriatric issues working also in RACF outreachclinicsand rehabilitation at War Memorial Hospital.

Position 5Wagga Wagga Base Hospital. Wagga Wagga Base Hospital - This position will have both clinical and academic components. It will expose the person appointed to the challenges and the rewards of working in both a busy city hospital as well as in parts of rural regional Australia.

The clinicalcomponentof the post will offer training in a broad range of clinical settings:

  • In-patient care in the 8-bed Geriatric Evaluation and Management (GEM) Unit

  • In-patient care in the 4-bed Delirium Unit

  • In-patient care within the 8-bed Residential Transition Aged Care Programme

  • (TACP) at the Forrest Centreadjacent toWWBH.

  • Ortho-geriatric liaison for patients admitted to WWBH following hip fractures.

  • Currently some 150-200 patients per year are seen by the Ortho-geriatric service.

  • Aged Care consultations from across the hospital including from the hospitals Emergency Department and Emergency Medical Unit.

  • Psychogeriatric Liaison including input into in-patient management atYathongLodge a 16-bed psychogeriatric facilitylocatedadjacent toWWBH.

  • Out-reach clinical Aged Care services to the wider Murrumbidgee Local Health District.

  • Participation in the Acute General Medical On-Call roster at WWBH.

In addition the person appointed will be expected toparticipatein the Departments evolving academic activities including:

  • Assistancewith the day-to-day teaching and clinical supervision of undergraduate medical students from the University of New South Wales and Notre Dame University. Between one and four clinical students are attached to Aged Care at any given time.

  • Staff development activities which include a weekly Journal Club and a weekly Clinical Meeting.

  • Participation in the weekly Dept. of Medicine Clinical Meeting at WWBH.

  • Participation in the Dept. of Aged Cares emerging research program. Currently this focuses on:

  • Elderly patients following stroke

  • Elderly patients following hip fracture

  • Elderly patients who are contemplating elective surgery

  • Very elderly patients who present to the hospitals ED

  • Finally the person appointed will be encouraged toparticipatein service development activities relating to Aged Care.

  • Each position is involved in consultant led clinics.

All Advanced Traineesare responsible forthe management and rounds on Sundays for4 hourshift in a 1 in 4 roster at St Vincents. It is expected that each trainee will develop a project and be involved inresearch basedactivities with the aim to publish and present at the annual conference.

Selection Criteria

MBBS or equivalent currentlyregisteredor eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia inan appropriate registrationcategory.

Completion of at least four (4) full years of postgraduate experience.

Demonstrated commitment to training in Geriatric Medicine andpreviousexperience in Aged Care Medicine.

Demonstrated ability to work independently within a supervised clinical environment using excellent clinical skillsjudgementandexpertise.

Good timemanagement and organisational skills and advanced computing skills with excellent communication skills (verbal and written) anddemonstratedability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams.

Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement patientsafetyand risk management.

Evidence of continued professional development and commitment to self-education as well as a willingness to teach and support junior medical staff.

Personal integrity anddemonstratedcommitment to the philosophymissionand values of the Mary Aikenhead Ministries.
