Senior Director of Finance Carilion Medical Center
The Senior Director of Finance provides strategic financial leadership for Carilion Medical Center supporting the hospitals clinical operational and administrative functions through strong financial planning performance management and business insight. This role is responsible for leading hospital-based financial planning and analysis budgeting forecasting operational finance and performance analytics while helping drive initiatives that support growth operational excellence and high-value care delivery.
This position serves as a key financial partner to Carilion Medical Center leadership working closely with hospital operations nursing physician leaders department administrators corporate finance and executive leadership. The Senior Director of Finance also collaborates closely with finance leadership across service lines ambulatory operations and community hospitals to ensure alignment across the continuum of care promote coordinated financial strategy and support enterprise-wide decision-making. The role ensures alignment between medical center operations and organizational financial goals while promoting transparency accountability and long-term financial sustainability.
Key Responsibilities
Serves as a strategic finance leader for Carilion Medical Center providing guidance and insight to support hospital operations performance improvement and strategic priorities.
Leads the development coordination and oversight of the operating and capital budgets for Carilion Medical Center in partnership with hospital leadership and corporate finance.
Directs hospital forecasting variance analysis and financial performance reporting identifying trends risks and opportunities for improvement.
Establishes monitors and communicates key financial and operational performance indicators to support informed decision-making and accountability.
Coordinates and/or performs short- and long-range financial analyses using appropriate financial and statistical techniques to support hospital strategy business planning and resource allocation.
Evaluates the financial impact of operational initiatives new programs capital investments contracts and strategic opportunities and provides recommendations regarding implementation.
Partners with medical center leadership to assess operational issues understand financial implications and develop corrective actions or improvement strategies.
Collaborate with finance leadership across service lines ambulatory operations and community hospitals to ensure coordinated planning consistent financial assumptions and aligned strategies across the care continuum and hospital enterprise
Identifies and recommends opportunities to enhance financial performance improve operational efficiency and strengthen Carilion Medical Centers strategic position.
Leverages advanced analytics automation and emerging artificial intelligence tools to improve reporting generate actionable insights and increase the efficiency and effectiveness of finance support.
Provides consultative financial support and education to operational and clinical leaders to strengthen financial literacy planning discipline and performance ownership.
Supports business cases pro formas and scenario modeling related to medical center growth clinical programs capacity planning and operational transformation.
Cultivates effective partnerships across accounting revenue cycle enterprise finance and other administrative and operational functions to promote alignment strengthen decision support and ensure coordinated execution of Carilion Medical Centers strategic and operational priorities
Promotes consistency transparency and alignment between hospital financial management practices and broader Carilion enterprise finance standards.
This role is expected to operate with a high degree of independence influence and accountability translating Carilion Medical Center priorities into actionable financial insight that improves performance supports strategic decision-making and advances the organizations mission.
What We Require:
Education: Bachelors Degree in accounting finance or business administration. Masters degree in business administration or related field desirable.
Experience: Seven years experience in healthcare finance accounting or financial planning
Licensure/Certifications/Registration: CPA desirable
