Position Summary

Supports the teacher to insure the best possible learning experience for preschool age children in a safe and secure environment while maintaining confidentiality.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support a positive learning environment by providing educational support to students while working collaboratively with the lead teacher.
  • Extend all student support services to the English Language Learner (ELL) students.
  • Work independently of the teacher to plan and implement the curriculum to individual and small groups of students using age appropriate materials.
  • Know understand apply and support school licensing and GSRP program policies.
  • Gather and maintain data and other information pertaining to students on a regular basis.
  • Maintain 100% confidentiality in all areas pertaining to students.
  • Provide resources to support the students and their families as needed.
  • Administer assessments and interpret their results.
  • Work as partners with the lead teachers to meet with parents and discuss the progress their children are making toward achieving personal and program goals.
  • Register new students making sure they meet all eligibility requirements stipulated by the GSRP program guidelines.
  • Accompany the lead teacher on home visits.
  • Communicate with community staff and students to answer questions disseminate or explain information.

Education:

  • High School Diploma/GED required.
  • Associates of Arts Degree in early childhood/preschool education or child development associate credential (CDA) and approved by Michigan Department of Educational staff required
  • If no applicants meet the above educational requirements an Associate Teachers Preschool Education Preparation Plan can be completed by the person hired without meeting the above requirements. This plan must be completed within three (3) years of date of the hire and must minimally include two credit-bearing courses 60 clock hours or an equivalent of training per calendar year from an approved training institution or agency and must result in the attainment of the Preschool CDA or an associates degree in child development or early childhood education.
  • Training in Creative Curriculum preferred.

Certificates Licenses or Registrations: Further education must be met through attendance and participation at a minimum of five professional development days as well as five teacher in-service days per year. Licensing requirements also mandate earning twelve educational hours of early childhood training per year in addition to CPR and First Aid training.

Experience:

  • Experience working with childrens groups and/or training in early childhood development or childcare preferred.

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of school policies and safety regulations required.

Skills:

  • Good communication skills required.

Abilities:

  • Ability to be caring understanding and friendly towards students required.
  • Ability to communicate well with young children and adults required.
  • Ability to read and interpret school policies and handbook required.
  • Ability to apply common sense to carry out instructions furnished in written oral or diagram form required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students staff and community required.
  • Ability to read write and communicate effectively in English to perform essential job duties including but not limited to understanding and following safety instructions responding appropriately to emergency situations completing documentation and interacting with English-speaking staff students community and supervisors required.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to sit use hands to finger handle or feel; talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms; and stoop kneel crouch or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds of files materials computer and audio visual equipment etc. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus especially due to concentration on a computer screen and small numbers.

Work Environment

The noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud.
