Central State Hospital (CSH) is a 277 bed Joint Commission accredited psychiatric inpatient facility located in Petersburg Virginia. CSH has proudly been serving citizens of the Commonwealth since 1870 when we opened our doors as the first psychiatric hospital in the country dedicated to the treatment of African Americans. A new and modern CSH is currently under construction on the same property with a scheduled completion date of 2027.

CSH maintains the only maximum-security treatment facility in the state (111 beds). We also have 166 beds available for individuals in the community who need inpatient care as well as individuals in the criminal justice system. We believe that treatment should be holistic and focused on the persons individual needs recognizing that recovery is not linear or the same for every person. Treatment modalities may include medication evidence-based group and individual therapy peer support psychosocial rehabilitation vocational training preparation for court and treatment for substance use.

Central State Hospital is recruiting for a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner who will deliver high-quality patient-centered psychiatric care by ensuring medication practices meet established standards of care obtaining and documenting informed consent monitoring treatment effectiveness and side effects and revising care plans based on patient progress. The selected candidate will play a key leadership role as Head of the Treatment Team collaborating with interdisciplinary staff to support therapeutic outcomes timely documentation and compliance with hospital policies as well as federal and state regulations. Responsibilities include facilitating discharge planning with families and community partners participating in on-call coverage overseeing seclusion and restraint practices supporting performance improvement initiatives and maintaining accurate and timely clinical records. This Nurse Practitioner position is part of a pilot program designed to support a seven-day care model; while the core responsibilities align with those of a standard Nurse Practitioner role it offers additional scheduling flexibility including the potential for occasional weekend coverage or participation in patient rounds as needed to ensure continuity of care across all seven days with such duties coordinated in advance and aligned with program needs. The role also requires active participation in medical staff activities adherence to professional and regulatory standards handling court-related matters and fostering a respectful compassionate and recovery-oriented environment that promotes patient empowerment teamwork and excellence in care delivery.

Minimum Qualifications

Required:
- Successful completion of an accredited and approved Nurse Practitioner (NP) program.
- Current active licensure as a Certified Nurse Practitioner in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
- Valid and unrestricted Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registration.

Additional Considerations

Preferred:
- Proficiency in management of psychiatric patients.
