Manager note: I conducted initial virtual screening interviews with 10 candidates (from 14 resumes received) with the goal of identifying strong fits for the role. While many resumes reflected several years of experience that depth was not consistently demonstrated during the interviews.
In these initial conversations I focused on real-world engineering experiences typical challenges engineers face problem-solving ability and foundational technical multiple cases candidates were familiar with certain technologies only at a high level or through their peers but lacked hands-on experience. Others stated they had worked with the required tools and technologies yet were unable to answer basic questions about them.
For example in a couple of interviews candidates mentioned implementing an enterprise API gateway for a client. When asked which API gateway was used and what benefits it provided they were unable to respond.
My interview approach is intentionally straightforward and centered on fundamental questions. When the responses did not align with the experience and skills claimed on the resume I made the decision to reject those candidates.
