The Nursing Unit Manager position ensures that the ANA scope and standards of practice and the code of ethics for nurses are the foundation for nursing practice of the unit(s) The Unit Manager interacts with and contributes to the professional development of all unit staff practicing in a Shared Governance model of nursing practice. Addtionally the Nurse Manager is responsible for the overall operation and workflow of the nursing unit.
The Nursing Unit Manager promotes high quality care outcomes nursing research and evidence based practice and contributes to building and maintaining a strong environment that facilitates collaboration with the transdisciplinary healthcare team to achieve quality outcomes.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Establishes unit specific nursing goals in concert with the program objectives prioritized by the hospital strategic plan developed within the five pillars of excellence.
Works toward the strategic plan while keeping the mission of Shepherd Center in the forefront.
Assumes responsibility for personnel finance and resources of the unit(s).
Champions the assessment/planning/implementation/evaluation of educational opportunities that enhance the professional growth of the nursing staff.
Reviews and grant approval for educational opportunities that meet GNA guidelines for attaining contact hours.
Serves as an educational consultant to members of the facility involved in the creation of educational opportunities.
Lends support to the Education Committee as needed.
Collaborates with nurse managers and implements activities that support engagement and retention.
Practices proper safety techniques in accordance with Center and departmental policies and procedures. Responsible for the reporting of employee/patient/visitor injuries or accidents or other safety issues to the supervisor and in the occurrence notification system.
Monitors and ensures compliance with all regulatory requirements organizational standards and policies and procedures related to area of responsibility. Identifies potential risk areas within area of responsibility and supports problem resolution process
Additional Responsibilities Nurse Unit Manager Clinical specific:
Coordinates the placement of nursing students for clinical practicum.
Collaborates with nurse education committee on new graduate residency program.
Collaborates clinical staff recruitment with HR maintaining presence with regional programs - attends career fairs and conferences provides guest lectures hosts student conferences.
REQUIRED MINIMUM EDUCATION
REQUIRED MINIMUM CERTIFICATION
REQUIRED MINIMUM EXPERIENCE
Basic competencies are expected in negotiation and conflict resolution nursing research and other scholarly activities organizational behavior and development patient and employee safety performance improvement practice innovation professional nursing practice standards of clinical nursing practice systems for patient safety trends in business practices.
Progressive management experience
10 years of clinical and/or leadership experience.
REQUIRED MINIMUM SKILLS
Basic computer skills. Nursing skills appropriate to area of supervision.
Completes orientation and initial assessment of competency successfully by determined due date.
Completes mandatory education and annual competency assessment requirements by determined due date.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Masters degree in Nursing
2 or more years of work history with Shepherd Center (preferred).
Sales and marketing experience a plus
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Uses body tools or special devices to safely effectively and efficiently to move guide or place patients. Involves some latitude for judgement with regard to precision attained and the selection of what adaptive device(s) to utilize.
Ability to transfer and position patients consistent with lifting up to 50 lbs.
Repetitive lifting moving squatting kneeling and crawling physical requirements.
