Job Summary

Itinerant Teacher Adaptive Physical Education (APE)

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Provide students with appropriate learning activities and experiences in the academic subjectarea assigned to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual emotional physical and socialgrowth. Enable students to develop competencies and skills to function successfully in society.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Certification:

  • Bachelors degree or higher from a recognized accredited college or university.

  • Certified by the Texas Education Agency for Physical Education and Special Education (K-12 preferred).

  • Experience working with students with disabilities in a school setting preferred.

  • Ability to instruct students and manage behavior.

  • Excellent organizational communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Required to travel within district.

  • Valid Texas Drivers License.

  • Knowledge of assigned subject.

  • General knowledge of curriculum and instruction.

  • Three (3) years of experience in Special Education and/or Physical Education preferred.

  • Must be willing to obtain and maintain a current automated external defibrillator (AED) and CPR certification.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Probationary/Term Contract: 187 days

SALARY:

Pay Grade T60 (Teacher Classification) as approved by the Board of Trustees

FUNCTIONS:

Attendance

Regular and reliable attendance is an essential job function.

APE Specific Functions

  • Provide direct in-class support or consult adaptive physical education services to eligible students

    with disabilities at designated campuses on all grade levels.

  • Screen referrals for adaptive physical education and conduct APE evaluations.

  • Assess students with disabilities to determine motor skills physical fitness levels and needs for adapted physical education services.

  • Provide clear well-written summaries of evaluation results and present findings to the IEP committee to support eligibility and service recommendations.

  • Develop and implement individualized physical education programs aligned with each students IEP goals.

  • Adapt equipment environments and instructional strategies to ensure student access and participation in physical activities.

  • Track collect and maintain accurate data on student performance and progress toward IEP goals to inform instructional decisions and reporting.

  • Monitor student performance and adjust instruction based on ongoing data and student needs.

  • Engage in cooperative planning with the occupational/physical therapist and teachers when implementing IEPs.

  • Provide consultative services to general education and PE teachers who work with students with disabilities.

  • Create and maintain a weekly schedule of services for students ensuring alignment with IEP service minutes and campus schedules.

  • Promote inclusion by supporting students in general physical education settings when appropriate.

  • Provide training and support to staff on adaptations equipment use and strategies for including students with disabilities in physical activities.

  • Participate in APE team meetings.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Posture: Prolonged standing; frequent kneeling/squatting bending/stooping pushing/pulling and twisting

Motion: Frequent walking and lifting.

Lifting: Regular light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); may lift and move text books and classroom equipment

Environment: Work inside may work outside; regular exposure to noise

Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; work prolonged or irregular hours
