The Position

Our Global Internship Programme in Innovation & Sustainability (#IP2TIS) offers a unique opportunity for passionate individuals to gain hands-on experience in the pharmaceutical industry while making a positive impact on the world.

As an intern you will contribute to a project focused on supporting Roches transition towards climate-smart chemicals in R&D. The project aims to better understand the current carbon impact of chemical procurement identify opportunities to increase the use of greener alternatives and recommend practical business solutions that accelerate the shift towards more sustainable sourcing. Within the 3 months of internship you are expected to help consolidate procurement data identify high-impact substances and quick-win substitution opportunities assess the supplier landscape for bio-based or circular alternatives and contribute to the business case and solution design for the BioFlow pilot. Your work will support Roches net zero ambitions by helping reduce Scope 3 emissions improve the sustainability profile of chemicals used in research and encourage a broader green chemistry mindset in day-to-day operations. This internship offers a unique opportunity to connect sustainability strategy with practical R&D decision-making through data market intelligence and stakeholder collaboration.

The Opportunity

  • Clean and merge fragmented chemical procurement datasets to identify high-volume and high-emission substances

  • Conduct a gap analysis of current R&D chemical usage against SHE sustainability guidance to identify substitution opportunities

  • Research chemical suppliers and map available bio-based or circular alternatives including their status in Roches procurement system

  • Conduct stakeholder interviews with lab managers and R&D scientists to understand technical quality and regulatory constraints for chemical substitution

  • Support the development of a business case quantifying potential CO2e reduction and cost-benefit for the BioFlow pilot

  • Analyze the current status of green chemistry adoption and identify high-concern substances relevant for action

  • Draft functional requirements and decision-tree logic for a Sustainability Agent or chatbot within the ordering platform

  • Contribute to stakeholder mapping and the definition of a practical business solution to accelerate sustainable chemical procurement

Who You Are

You are enrolled or have completed your Masters studies at a university preferably in a STEM field such as Chemistry Pharmaceutical Sciences Environmental Sciences and Engineering or Data Science / Business Analytics with a solid understanding of chemistry within the last 12 months and are interested in applying your knowledge in a modern working environment as part of an internship of 3 months.

Furthermore you are

  • A structured proactive and detail-oriented team player with strong stakeholder communication skills and fluent English

  • Comfortable working with Excel Google Sheets or similar data tools

  • Quick to adapt to new systems; familiarity with tools such as ThoughtSpot or Ai supported analytical solutions is an advantage

  • Knowledgeable in green chemistry principles and/or have solid chemical literacy

  • Able to write clearly and translate technical findings into structured recommendations
