The Research Scientist I contributes to the development and execution of research projects in their designated area of specialization. The Research Scientist is highly innovative with strong critical thinking skills as well as technical expertise in research methods and possesses the desire for challenge in this innovative clinical research environment.

The Research Scientist I coordinates efforts directly with the Research Program Director in the relevant line of research and other Shepherd Center Research Directors. The Research Scientist I may act in a liaison capacity with other clinical programs and external organizations.

  • Initiates and directs research projects relating to neuromuscular disorders and rehabilitation in line with the mission of Shepherd Center.
  • Makes substantive contributions to securing external funding for the research program.
  • Conceptualizes and prepares funding proposals and submits at least one (1) grant for research funding per year.
  • Submits a minimum of one manuscript to refereed journals per year as no less than second author.
  • Makes a minimum of one presentation at a research meeting (local or national) per year.
  • Provides consultation on research studies as requested.
  • Mentors Research Assistants and Research Associates as well as other members of the research department and clinicians engaged in research.
  • Manages project budgets and expenses as directed by the Director of Research using resources wisely.
  • Assists with Virginia C. Crawford Research Institute program activities or Shepherd Center committees as directed by the Director of Research.
  • Practices proper safety techniques in accordance with Center and departmental policies and procedures. Responsible for the reporting of employee/patient/visitor injuries or accidents or other safety issues to the supervisor and in the occurrence notification system.
  • Monitors and ensures compliance with all regulatory requirements organizational standards and policies and procedures related to area of responsibility. Identifies potential risk areas within area of responsibility and supports problem resolution process.

REQUIRED MINIMUM EDUCATION

  • PhD DSc ScD EdD DPhil or equivalent advanced degree in field of study OR
  • Masters in related field with 5-7 years experience in research activities and eligible for extramural funding or foundation funding

REQUIRED MINIMUM CERTIFICATION

  • No professional certifications required.

REQUIRED MINIMUM EXPERIENCE

  • 2 years of post-doctoral or 5 years equivalent experience in research and analysis.

REQUIRED MINIMUM SKILLS

  • Basic research and analysis skills.
  • Sufficient overall understanding and knowledge of computer hardware and software necessary to successfully complete research and training projects.
  • Knowledge of research methodology principles and procedures.
  • Ability to develop and deliver scientific presentations.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a diverse clinical research and other stakeholder community.
  • Ability to develop scientific reports and manuscripts based on original research.
  • Ability to utilize and maintain advanced scientific equipment and facilities.
  • Knowledge of contracts and grants preparation and management.
  • Completes orientation and initial assessment of competency successfully by determined due date.
  • Completes mandatory education and annual competency assessment requirements by determined due date.

  • PhD or equivalent work experience in clinical or disability research.

  • Requires onsite working majority of the time with limited potential for remote work.
