Interactive Media Arts (IMA) is an academic community of artists thinkers and makers dedicated to cultivating cutting-edge theory and practice within the field of media arts. Position Summary

Adjunct Teaching Associates (part-time) at IMA provide comprehensive support to students in both foundation and capstone courses. They deliver academic guidance technical assistance and creative mentorship through structured recitations regular office hours studio sessions and specialized help sessions. They also manage logistical and administrative aspects of these courses ensuring smooth operation throughout the academic year.

Beyond the classroom Adjunct Teaching Associates play a vital role in maintaining IMAs technical infrastructure and contributing to its scholarly community. Their responsibilities include organizing and supporting departmental events (workshops exhibitions guest lectures the IMA Show and Capstone Show) maintaining digital resources (websites and databases) and developing support systems that enhance student learning. Adjunct Teaching Associates also help strengthen the departments external connections by fostering relationships with museums and emerging media organizations in Shanghai and internationally and by supporting research funding initiatives.

As emerging professionals in the field Adjunct Teaching Associates are encouraged to pursue their own creative and research interests while at IMA. With access to departmental facilities and mentorship from full-time faculty they can engage in traditional research artistic creation community-building projects software development curriculum enhancement accessibility innovations or social practice work. This self-directed professional development component enhances both the Adjunct Teaching Associates career trajectory and the intellectual vitality of the IMA community.

This is a part-time position with an expected commitment of 24 hours per week. Candidates must be Chinese citizens (including residents of Hong Kong Macau and Taiwan) or non-Chinese citizens with Chinese green card or work permits (subject to the relevant immigration regulations).

Responsibilities

During the Fall and Spring semesters:

  • Support one or more IMA foundation course(s) (Interaction Lab Communications Lab Creative Coding Lab) and / or the IMA Capstone Studio course
  • Offer student support through office hours and studio hours
  • Organize and support IMA events

During the Summer break:

  • Support the IMA Summer Program
  • Support foundation courses if theyre scheduled during the summer
  • Support the IMA Low Residency Masters program
  • Prepare for upcoming exhibitions and other large-scale IMA events

General Responsibilities:

  • Maintain and develop departmental resources for faculty and students
  • Advance the mission of IMA as an internationally recognized hub for emerging media education and research by:
    • Developing and maintaining connections with various cultural institutions and organizations
    • Assisting the department and faculty in obtaining grants and/or sponsorships

Qualifications

Required Education

  • Masters degree in a related field such as media arts emerging media human-computer interaction design computational arts etc. MFA MPS MDes or equivalent preferred. Applicants should have their degree completed by the start date of the appointment.

Required Experience

  • Experience in one or more of the following is required:
    • Interaction Design Physical Computing Digital Fabrication
    • Time-based Media Production (Storytelling Video Audio 3D Animation)
    • Web-based Creative Coding
  • Experience in researching developing and exhibiting a variety of emerging media projects is preferred
  • Some teaching experience at the undergraduate level is preferred

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Strong English speaking reading and writing skill are required
  • Knowledge of one or more of the following is required:
    • Arduino Processing
    • Adobe Creative Suite Blender
    • HTML CSS JavaScript
  • Knowledge of one or more of the following is preferred:
    • Game engines such as Unity Unreal Godot
    • Generative A.I. tools and workflows
    • Node-based visual programming languages such as TouchDesigner MaxMSPJitter vvvv
    • 3D modelling/sculpting software such as Cinema4D Rhino ZBrush
    • Web frameworks and libraries such as React Node D3
    • Electronic circuit prototyping and PCB development
    • 3D printing laser cutting CNC milling woodworking etc.
  • Teaching Associates are expected to be good communicators organized and punctual and to take initiative when necessary
