The Opportunity

The Department of Civil Engineering in the College of Engineering at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) Daytona Beach invites applications for an open-rank faculty position (Assistant Associate or Full Professor) focused on: 1) next-generation terrestrial aerospace infrastructure and 2) space infrastructure and extraterrestrial construction. This strategic hire advances ERAUs mission to lead innovation in aerospace space infrastructure and engineering solutions for off-planet environments and aviation/aerospace infrastructure needs at home.

The successful candidate will contribute to research and education supporting next-generation space structures lunar and planetary infrastructure and construction technologies for extreme environments aligned with NASAs Moon-to-Mars architecture DARPAs 10-Year Lunar Architecture and the future of human space exploration.

About the Department of Civil Engineering:

Established in 1994 the Department of Civil Engineering has 13 full-time faculty an enrollment of 96 full-time students and offers Bachelor and Master degrees. The Civil Engineering Department offers four well-supported tracks namely transportation structures geotechnical and Environmental Sustainability & Resilience with corresponding laboratory facilities.

The College of Engineering empowers students to become engineering leaders innovators and entrepreneurs. Home to more than 3500 students our vision is to shape the future of the aerospace industry. We pride ourselves on our commitment to groundbreaking aerospace research and innovation as well as our supportive and inclusive learning community. Qualifications

Required Education and Qualifications:

Candidates must hold a terminal degree in engineering; a doctorate in Civil Engineering or closely related discipline is preferred.

Desired areas of expertise include(but not limited to):

  • Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) infrastructure including vertiports and integrated urban systems

  • Spaceport and launch/landing infrastructure for terrestrial and extraterrestrial applications

  • Structural design and deployment of space-based and planetary infrastructure

  • Autonomous robotic and in-situ construction systems

  • Advanced materials additive manufacturing and novel structural systems for space applications

  • Regolith-based construction in-situ resource utilization (ISRU) and extraterrestrial site development

  • Resilient infrastructure for lunar Martian and extreme operational environments

  • AI-enabled methods for assessment and operation

The candidate should also demonstrate a strong publication record potential for securing external research funding excellence in the classroom commitment to innovative and experiential learning effective communication skills student-centered teaching ability to mentor undergraduate and graduate students and the ability to collaborate with diverse teams.
