Position Summary
The Tier 2 Behavior Support Specialist works collaboratively with building staff to support students experiencing behavioral challenges particularly those needing interventions beyond Tier 1 school-wide supports but not requiring Tier 3 individualized intensive services. This position focuses on implementing targeted behavior strategies in alternative learning settings monitoring student progress and supporting successful reintegration into the general education classroom. The ideal candidate is student-centered proactive and skilled in behavior support practices that promote positive academic social and emotional outcomes.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Implement research-based behavioral intervention strategies including social skills instruction self-management supports and academic interventions as outlined in Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs).
- Provide direct support to students in alternative learning settings and other school environments as needed.
- Conduct student observations and collect behavioral data to monitor progress toward behavioral social-emotional and academic goals.
- Maintain accurate documentation and prepare regular progress reports for staff and families.
- Collaborate with teachers case managers parents/guardians and support staff to review student progress and adjust intervention plans based on data.
- Model effective behavior support strategies for classroom staff including positive reinforcement redirection and de-escalation techniques.
- Support students during transitions throughout the school day to reduce barriers and increase success in classroom settings.
- Provide crisis intervention and behavior support when necessary following district procedures and protocols.
- Assist students in developing social-emotional and interpersonal skills that promote positive interactions with peers and adults.
- Participate in problem-solving teams student support meetings and other collaborative planning processes as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Valid teaching certificate; Special Education or a related field preferred.
- Bachelors degree in Education
- Previous experience working with students with behavioral challenges preferred.
- Experience working in culturally diverse educational settings.
- Strong understanding of PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) frameworks.
- Knowledge of behavior intervention practices data collection and progress monitoring.
- Strong collaboration communication and relationship-building skills.
- Ability to remain calm flexible and solution-focused in challenging situations.
