Job Summary

When Alfred Fain founded a small Rhode Island tire store in 1924 at the time no one could have predicted how Teknor Apex would become an international custom compounder sought out by companies around the world. After a nearly hundred-year journey thats carried us through acquisitions and expansion we now have nine U.S. locations as well as operations in Belgium Singapore Germany and China.

GENERAL OVERVIEW:

To oversee the accelerated and outdoor weathering program for the company. This includes running and maintaining the weathering test equipment tracking and recording data and test results photo documentation and compilation of reports for management and sales. Job includes responsibility for maintaining communication and testing through various outdoor testing sites which includes coordination of samples to be sent and returned for evaluation on a regular basis. Position requires that technicians must learn different polymer bases and the weathering characteristics each brings and the ability to spot trends and recognize warning signs if materials begin to show signs of failure. Being able to identify and analyze data to report in weekly development meetings is important. The technician will work closely with the product development team in laying out design of experiments in the development of new or improved materials benchmarking competitive products and running test programs both internally and externally to ASTM standardized test methods. Must possess the ability to work independently as well as in a team environment. Planning and organization are crucial as there will be multiple projects underway at any given time.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Critical decision making including looking at history files basic analysis and basic problem solving.
  • Performing tasks related to development work such as mixing sample batches running additional tests including procedures outlined in ASTM documents setting up experiments interpretation of results and interpolating results.
  • Gaining understanding and communicating knowledge of our pigment systems and making adjustments to the color of our plastic material.
  • Participating in housekeeping and safety programs such as general cleaning and labeling storage areas and materials.
  • Advanced computer skills are needed and use of Word Excel Access and a main frame application will be required.
  • Utilizing a solid chemistry and physics background for problem solving in both team environments and individually statistical analyses of data from experiments.

SKILLS:

  • Ability to read analyze and interpret common scientific and technical journals interpret documents such as safety rules operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers regulatory agencies or members of the organization.
  • Ability to effectively present information to management technical and/or customers/sales team.
  • Ability to calculate figures proportions percentages area circumference and volume working with positive and negative numbers and conversions from standard units to metric.
  • Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished is written oral or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a variety of abstract and concrete variables.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

Minimum two-year degree in a science field; of one to three years related color experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
