Reports to: Clinically & professionally responsible to the Consultant Surgeon
Service Relationship: Clinically and professionally responsible to the attending Consultant. Administratively accountable to the Medical Manpower Manager
Location: Bon Secours Hospital Dublin
Job Summary
The fundamental philosophy guiding this position will be to promote and preserve the Bon Secours Mission Values and Ethos by effective delivery of Mission Objectives in your capacity as Hospital Registrar.
To ensure the effective and efficient delivery of care to patients adhering at all times to Hospital policy procedures and protocol.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- To act under the supervision of the consultant in the provision of a general surgical service and to support the consultant in their duties
- Admit review and assess surgical patients as required and/or requested by the admitting Consultant and/or Nursing Staff
- Review post-operative surgical patients routinely and when requested by the admitting consultant and/or nursing staff
- Document review findings in clinical notes in a timely and legible manner
- Attend at Consultant rounds daily or as requested
- Take hand over of patients from previous shift Registrar so that continuity of care is ensured and immediate decisions are made and orders written
- Attend to procedures such as I.V. infusions catheterisation lumbar punctures etc. to be dealt with as required/directed by the relevant consultant
- Prescribe medications under the direction of the relevant consultant and to dispense out of hours medication in the absence of the pharmacist in accordance with Hospital policy
- Ensure that all medications are recorded in the medical records/prescription chart.
- To liaise directly with the patients consultant in relation to any significant change or deterioration in the patients condition
- To assist in theatre as per roster
- To take part in the oncall roster
- Attend at emergencies in all areas of the Hospital
- Be responsible for the medical history and physical examination of all elective and admissions for surgical patients
- Ensure that consent is sought and documented
- Comply with all relevant hospital policies procedures and guidelines
- Work closely with multi-disciplinary teams within the hospital to improve processes and practices and to identify areas for quality improvement with regard to JCI Accreditation
- To accompany patients as required in the event of the transfer of a patient to an alternative hospital/institution
- Be an excellent communicator considering the wide variety of situations that may arise on a daily basis which requires a great competence in interpersonal skills
- Co-ordinate and complete the Surgical Roster in conjunction with the Medical Manpower Manager.
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS
- Medical degree MBBS or equivalent.
- Current Medical Council Registration.
- Current ACLS.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience as first assist in robotic surgery (urology and gynaecology)
ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE
- Experience at Registrar level in an acute hospital setting
ESSENTIAL SKILLS
- Proven ability of work as an effective team member.
- Ability to communicate effectively.
- All posts require a high level of flexibility to ensure the delivery of an effective and efficient service. Therefore the post holder will be required to demonstrate flexibility as part of their duties.
