Job Summary
Peninsula Community Center a ministry of Peninsula Covenant Church (PCC) builds community by providing personal healthy and meaningful connections through aquatics fitness tennis and community programming. PCC is a vibrant and forward-thinking church located in Redwood City dedicated to serving our community and making a positive impact through our outreach programs including our Community Center. PCC employs over 150 seasonal and part-time staff to support various community efforts. Our team thrives on flexibility openness to change and collaboration with a shared passion for helping others and working together.
PRINCIPAL OBJECTIVE
The Masters Swim Coach leads and develops adult swimmers of varying abilities by providing high-quality coaching structured workouts and technical instruction. This role promotes physical fitness goal-setting and community-building while fostering a positive inclusive and motivating training environment.
PRINCIPAL WORKING RELATIONSHIP
This position reports to the Aquatics Director and works closely with the Aquatics Coordinator Executive Director and other Masters coaches. The Masters Swim Coach regularly engages with adult swimmers and PCC members creating a welcoming and encouraging atmosphere. Collaboration with all Center staff is essential to maintaining a high-quality aquatics program and facility.
WORKWEEK
- Requires availability during scheduled Masters swim program hours (early mornings evenings and/or weekends as assigned)
- Attend all required training meetings and program events
- Hours and shifts can vary ranging from 14 hours per week
- Seasonal with sessions running throughout the year
SUMMARY OF KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop and lead structured swim workouts tailored to a wide range of adult abilities from fitness swimmers to competitive athletes.
- Provide stroke instruction technique correction and individualized feedback to support swimmer development and goal achievement.
- Foster a positive inclusive and motivating team environment that encourages consistency community and personal growth.
- Follow all facility policies safety standards and the Emergency Action Plan (EAP) at all times during practices.
- Arrive prepared and on time for all scheduled classes.
- Communicate scheduling changes in advance secure appropriate substitute coverage when needed and assist with coverage when available.
- Represent PCC professionally and collaborate with all Aquatics and Center staff to provide excellent service to members and guests.
- Other duties as they pertain to and support the ministrys principal objectives.
PROFILE SKILLS AND CORE COMPETENCIES
- Strong swim coaching and instructional skills with the ability to design engaging and effective workouts for adult swimmers of varying abilities.
- Ability to modify sets and provide alternatives based on swimmer goals experience and physical limitations.
- Positive leadership style that promotes community accountability and encouragement.
- Clear and professional communication skills.
- Dependable and self-motivated with the ability to manage responsibilities independently.
- Calm and attentive in a pool environment with strong awareness of safety protocols.
EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION
- Previous coaching experience with Masters or adult swim programs strongly preferred.
- Strong background in competitive swimming or lap swimming required.
- CPR/AED and First Aid and Coaches Safety certifications required (or ability to obtain upon hire).
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must be able to be on deck and in the water for extended periods.
- Must be able to demonstrate swim techniques and complete workouts as needed.
- Must be able to swim 300 yards continuously (freestyle or breaststroke) and tread water for two minutes.
- Must be able to perform water rescues and respond to emergencies as needed.
- Must be able to lift 30 pounds occasionally and 1520 pounds frequently.
- Must adhere to PCCs Safe Church policies including background check and training.
