This is a temporary position and there are no leave or retirement benefits offered with this position. Temporary employees who work an annual average of 30 or more hours per week may be eligible for health insurance coverage under the High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP). Note: Permanent and time-limited NC State Government employees must separate from their permanent or time-limited position in order to work in a temporary position. All temporary employees are limited to one NC State Government temporary assignment at a time.


Individuals hired into a temporary State job must be fully qualified for the job. This temporary position is located at 4761 Ward Blvd. Wilson - Wilson County with the Department of Health & Human Services.


Job Order Hourly Rate of Pay: $15.00 (Based on education and/or years of relevant work experience reflected on the application).

Effective July 1 2025 candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they have the minimum education and experience listed from the class specification. The Knowledge Skills and Abilities listed within this vacancy announcement will be used only as management preferences and will be used to screen for the most qualified pool of applicants.

Key Responsibilities:

  • This position is responsible for work in the planting cultivation and care of shrubs trees plants and grass in the yard and surrounding areas of state buildings and institutions. Work is performed in accordance with instructions from an administrative supervisor; however this employee must determine the care and treatment necessary to maintain grounds and shrubs in good condition.
  • Non-routine problems concerning the selection placement care and treatment of plants to assure a beautiful and orderly landscape are referred to a supervisor or nursery dealer for advice.
  • Work may include the supervision of a small number of employees. Work is inspected and evaluated on the basis of appearance of the grounds.

Management Preferences:

  • Basic knowledge of the application of trade skills to the duties assigned.
  • Skill in the use and care of equipment and tools used in performing work assignments.
  • Ability to follow oral work assignments.

Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of progressive experience in horticultural work; or Associates degree in agriculture and natural resources greenhouse and grounds maintenance horticulture technology landscape gardening or closely related field from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Qualifications May require North Carolina Commercial Drivers License.
