Description of Work

This position will ensure quality student support services working within the Exceptional Children guidelines and the schools budgetary guidelines. This position will serve as a liaison between the NCSD professional department heads and other agencies. Will ensure compliance with students IEP transition plans and expected to strengthening student American Sign Language (ASL) skills as required by the schools Communication Policy. This position is responsible for leading the NCSD Student Admissions Team working with LEAs in and outside of North Carolina. This position will provide their own speech services caseload determined by the students IEP.

About the North Carolina School for the Deaf:

The North Carolina School for the Deaf is a specialty school for Deaf/Hard of Hearing students ages 3 (three) to 22 (twenty-two) with a catchment area encompassing the 46 westernmost counties in North Carolina. Established in 1894 the school provided significant milestones in deaf and blind education.

North Carolina School for the Deaf (NCSD) operates per the academic calendar from August to May with additional summer programming in June. Students are typically present on campus Sunday afternoons through Friday general support services and administration operate year-round.

***This is a full time 11-month position (off in July) that typically works Monday to Friday.***

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

This position is responsible for:

  • Providing direct speech-language services to a caseload of students in grades K12 as determined by their IEPs. The role supports and promotes the development of students American Sign Language (ASL) skills ensuring progress toward ASL competency in accordance with the schools Communication Policy.
  • Providing documented observations and evaluation data to the school principal and conducting regular meetings with support staff to ensure compliance with Exceptional Children guidelines across disciplines. Particular emphasis is placed on serving Deaf and hard of hearing students as well as DeafPlus students (Deaf students with additional disabilities) in grades K12.
  • Ensuring delivery of quality student support services in alignment with budgetary guidelines.
  • Serving as a liaison among NCSD professional department heads and coordinates with internal teams such as Mental Health Student Health Center Management Team and Residential Life. Additionally the role collaborates with external agencies including Vocational Rehabilitation RHA Mental Health Physical Therapy providers and other contracted services as needed.
  • Ensuring compliance with students IEP transition plans and monitoring staff participation in required trainings seminars and professional development activities. The position also ensures that relevant information is effectively communicated to NCSD staff students and stakeholders.
  • Serves as a member of the NCSD Student Admissions Team working collaboratively with Local Education Agencies (LEAs) within and outside of North Carolina. The role ensures that admissions decisions are made in accordance with Exceptional Children guidelines and are centered on each students best interest.

Recruitment Salary Range $52800 to $70000 (Dependent on qualifying education and relevant experience.)

This position is designated Mandatory and must report or stay over during adverse weather events.

Supplemental Information:

NCSD uses the Merit-Based Recruitment and Selection Plan to fill positions subject and not subject to the State Human Resources Act with the most qualified individuals. Hiring salary will be based on relevant qualifications internal equity and budgetary considerations pertinent to the advertised position.
