Job Summary

Position Summary:

The Financial Counselor plays an essential role in the revenue cycle by guiding patients through their financial obligations related to medical services with clarity accuracy and empathy. This position provides detailed explanations of insurance coverage out-of-pocket costs payment options and available financial assistance resources to help patients make informed decisions. Working closely with patients clinical teams and revenue cycle partners the Financial Counselor conducts insurance verification prepares cost estimates collects payments establishes payment plans and assists with financial assistance applications. This role also supports the management of delinquent accounts coordinates with collection agencies as appropriate and ensures all activities comply with Trinity Health financial policies and regulatory requirements. Operating within a supportive team-oriented environment the Financial Counselor relies on strong communication problem-solving and customer service skills to deliver compassionate respectful financial guidance while supporting organizational revenue integrity.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct insurance verification estimate patient financial responsibility and provide clear explanations of coverage deductibles and out of pocket costs.
  • Collect payments establish payment plans and assist patients in completing financial assistance Medicaid and other aid applications.
  • Review and monitor self pay and delinquent accounts; initiate follow up communications and coordinate with external collection agencies when required.
  • Counsel patients on available payment options Trinity Health policies and financial resources while delivering compassionate and professional support.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of financial discussions account notes and payment arrangements in the appropriate systems.
  • Collaborate with Patient Financial Services leadership and cross department teams to resolve complex billing issues and ensure timely compliant financial processing.


Licenses and Certifications Required:
  • None

Educational Requirements:
  • Associate degree in business healthcare or related field preferred.

Experience Requirements:
  • 1 year of experience of billing collections or financial counseling in a healthcare environment required.
  • 2 years of customer service experience in healthcare required.
  • Previous experience in collections revenue cycle or financial counseling preferred.
  • Familiarity with insurance billing reimbursement processes and patient financial assistance programs is a plus.

Special Skills or Training Requirements:
  • Proficiency in hospital billing systems payor portals and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel Word Outlook).
  • Strong understanding of insurance terminology coverage verification and financial assistance eligibility.
  • Excellent problem solving organizational and communication skills to manage patient financial needs.
  • Ability to explain complex financial concepts in a clear and empathetic manner.
  • Strong customer service skills emotional intelligence and professionalism when working with patients.
  • Ability to work independently prioritize tasks and meet deadlines in a fast paced environment.

Physical Requirements:

Work requires the ability to remain seated for long periods while performing computer based tasks such as reviewing accounts entering data and communicating electronically. Frequent use of hands and fingers is necessary for typing calculator use and handling documents. The role requires the ability to speak clearly on the phone and in person lift and carry materials or files up to 20 pounds and occasionally stand walk bend or reach during routine office activities. Visual acuity must be sufficient to read detailed financial documents billing statements and computer screens for extended periods.

Environmental Requirements:

Work is primarily performed in an office or patient access environment within Trinity Health facilities. The role involves regular interaction with patients families staff and external agencies requiring strong professionalism and emotional resilience. The environment may involve moderate noise from office equipment frequent phone communication and the need to maintain confidentiality within shared or semiprivate workspaces. Occasional stress may arise from working with distressed or frustrated patients navigating complex financial issues or meeting departmental timelines and accuracy standards. Adherence to HIPAA and all organizational privacy and safety regulations is required at all times.
