JOB SUMMARY

Each member of our teaching faculty is responsible for advancing Herron Preparatory Academys (HPA) mission and embodying our core values by ensuring all scholars have access to quality classical education that leads to systematic academic achievement and strong character development.

Our Classical Studies Teacher along with all members of our Related Studies Team vital to achieving this goal. Our Related Studies Team is similar to but distinct from other schools specials teams. Its similar in that the Classical Studies Teacher meets with all K-6 scholars once per week in a rotation with other Related Studies Teachers and teaches one electives-style course for 7th & 8th-grade scholars per semester. Its distinct in that our Classical Studies instruction serves as an integrated global history experience for all scholars that systematically progresses as they advance grade-levels and introduces them to informal and conversational Latin in elementary grades.

The course of study taught by this teacher ranges from learning about the Ancient Egyptian pyramids to the Greek myths to the Roman Empires greatest battles to Mesoamerican cultures. Often these studies culminate in handicrafts that demonstrate elements of scholars learning. Over the patient study of a multi-year sequence of exploring Latin this course serves as a launching point for scholars formal Latin 1 studies that begin in their late middle grades history classes.

The ideal faculty member in this role loves to tell stories teach scholars history create inspiring handicrafts and has a passion for language development. They build relationships based on trust and respect with scholars families and HPA staff members; directly leads our scholars learning by setting clear high standards for scholars academic and behavioral expectations; planning lessons that engage scholars curiosity and interest; evaluates effectiveness and adjusts instructional strategies based on scholars performance and models the HPA Habits we strive to instill in all of our scholars. They will also have a track record of student achievement and building relationships with children in elementary and middle school grades.

Taken together our teaching faculty are integral to ensuring scholars rapidly progress toward and ultimately attain mastery of grade-level academic standards and exceed our behavioral expectations.

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Meet and instruct assigned classes in the locations and at times designated. **A contract year includes 180 instructional days and up to 10 professional development days.
2. Develop and maintain a classroom environment conducive to effective learning and is consistent with Herrons Core Values and Herron Preps vision for student culture.
3. Together with scholars set support and maintain high standards of classroom behavior.
4. Employ a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media to differentiate instruction and meet student needs that lead to college-readiness measured by ILEARN proficiency or course learning goals.
5. Participate in grade-level or team meetings and utilize student data to inform instruction.
6. Regularly evaluate student progress and collaborate with colleagues to adjust instruction in response to student needs.
7. Take reasonable precautions to protect scholars equipment materials and facilities.
8. Assist in upholding and enforcing school rules and policies.
9. Work to establish and maintain open lines of communication with scholars and their parents concerning student academic and behavioral progress.
10. Attend scheduled faculty meetings professional development meetings and other sessions as determined by Herron Preps leadership team and Herrons executive leadership team. This includes mandatory attendance at the annual Symposium (a day-long professional development determined by the administration). The date of this event is listed on the Master Calendar.
11. Attend evening events that include but may not be limited to Parent Orientation Meet the Teacher Night Parent/Teacher Conferences and Open Houses. The dates of these events are listed on the Master Calendar.
12. Host a semesterly First Friday-style event co-led with the Visual Arts Teacher as a showcase of scholars learning.
13. Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

1. Bachelors Degree

2. Valid IN Teacher License

3. Possess a strong understanding of child development pedagogy and content

4. Demonstrated track record of student performance in the classroom

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

1. 5 years of experience

2. Training or experience in classical education

3. Experience with teaching using the school curriculum aligned to the role

4. EL certification or endorsement
