Job Summary

80%: Conduct Writing Consultations
  • Facilitate and foster student learning by asking questions collaborating with writers during consultations and teaching important writing strategies and concepts.
  • Contribute to the creation of a welcoming and collaborative environment for learning.
10%: Provide Additional Writing Center Services
  • Lead writing workshops and assist with marketing events.
  • Develop writing resources like handouts workshops and videos.
  • Facilitate writing groups or embedded course support for undergraduate students.
5%: Participate in Professional Development
  • Participate in pre-service training and ongoing education trainings and professional development.
  • Participate in committees and special projects bringing your ideas interests and skills to expand the collective knowledge and abilities of the Wingspan.
5%: Other duties as assigned

Work Schedule
The Wingspan is located in Anschutz Library on the KU Lawrence campus and shifts are scheduled between 9 am-7 pm Monday-Thursday 9 am-5 pm Friday and 2-6 pm Sunday. Up to 20 hours per week.

  1. Previous experience as a writing consultant or peer tutor at a high school or college as shown in application materials.
  2. Previous experience with public speakingas shown in application materials.
  3. Ability to write and speak multiple languages.
  4. Previous experience demonstratinginvestment in helping writers reach their academic goals with strong listening skills sensitivity generosity and flexibility as shown in application materials.
  5. A Federal Work-Study (FWS) award for the academic year.


Position Overview
Undergraduate writing consultants are peer educators who meet one-on-one with students in person and online to discuss writing projects from any course field of study or genre. Undergraduate consultants collaborate with writers at any point in the writing process teach strategies for researching drafting organizing revising and editing and direct writers to resources. Writing consultants fluent in multiple languages can also provide language consultations to KU undergraduate students. Consultants may support other Writing Center Services programming like workshops writing groups and resource development.

Consultants should have the ability to work at least 8 hours per week including some evening and weekend availability and are required to work in-person on the Lawrence campus.

Position Requirements
During the semester term of the appointment the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: (1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or (2) be pre-enrolled in the upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or (3) be enrolled in summer session or (4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).

Employment Conditions
(1) Student employees are not eligible for remote work arrangements unless an exception is approved by the unit leadership and HR.

(2) This is an hourly/non-exempt position. A student employee cannot hold an hourly/non-exempt position and a salaried/exempt graduate or undergraduate position (GRA/GTA/GA/RUA/RGA) concurrently.
