Job Summary

The School of Performing Arts at The University of Akron invites applications for a non-tenure-track Assistant Professor of Practice Artist/Teacher of Percussion beginning in August 2026. Responsibilities will include teaching and service to the school college and university commensurate with the expectations of full-time faculty in the School of Performing Arts. Weseekscholarsthat will lead collaborations among faculty students and community partners thataddress questions ofwell-being public safety and civic engagement.

Duties will include but are not limited to:

Teaching applied undergraduate and graduate percussion students.
Coaching chamber ensembles (percussion ensemble world percussion ensembles and Steel Drum Band).
Coordinating and teaching the weekly percussion studio class.
Assisting with the instruction and coordination of the UA Marching Band drumline.
Serving on graduate MM committees; participating in faculty meetings and committees; and engaging in other service appropriate to a full-time faculty member.

Additional responsibilities may be assigned based on the candidates strengths and background in accordance with the needs of the School of Performing Arts.

Required Qualifications

Master of Music degree (Percussion or closely related field).
Teaching experience in higher or secondary education or commensurate professional experience.
Artistic activity as a percussionist and/or pedagogue.

Preferred Qualifications

DMA or equivalent professional experience.
Creative/scholarly activity at the regional national and/or international level.
Evidence of recruiting and retention of undergraduate and graduate percussion students.

The UA School of Performing Arts is part of the Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences and has a long history of excellence in performance and teaching. The School offers curricula in arts administration dance and music at the bachelors and masters levels and is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music and the National Association of Schools of Dance.
