Primary Purpose:
To provide leadership coordination and support for the Special Education Department. This position ensures district policies and procedures are carried out and align with state and federal regulations. Special Education Department Specialists work closely with the Special Populations Administrative Team to ensure implementation of the special education program aligns with the districts vision. This position participates and leads the districts activities related to Comprehensive Coordinated Early Intervening Services.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
Masters degree required.
License/Certification in the State of Texas
Valid Texas teaching certificate in Special Education required
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Knowledge of special needs of students in assigned area
Knowledge of Admission Review and Dismissal (ARD) Committee process and Individual Education Plan (IEP) goal setting process and implementation
Knowledge of how to adapt curriculum and instruction for special needs
Effective communication skills
Experience:
Minimum 3 years of experience in assigned area/special education
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Program Management
- Assist in establishing department objectives and oversee the plan for the implementation and evaluation of these objectives.
- Participate in implementation of identified areas of targeted improvement needs as determined at the federal state and local level.
- Conduct department meetings and attend relevant school district and professional meetings as assigned by the supervisor.
- Assist teacher in assigned area in the handling of day-to-day functions related to assignment and act as a resource person.
- Recommend to the Coordinators/Director necessary materials and distribute these materials to the department.
- Assist in maintaining an accurate inventory of the department materials.
- Assign and provide assistance to department contract staff as needed.
- Provide specialized training to district and department personnel as assigned.
- Draft caseload assignments for area of specialization in conjunction with assigned Coordinator for Director/Principal approval.
- Monitor caseloads and recommend adjustments to administration.
- Serve in a supporting role in the assigned area of specialization.
- Assist the department administrators in developing interpreting and implementing policies and procedures.
- Remain informed on educational innovations and trends related to assignment.
- Assist the administrators in coordinating program needs.
- Oversee area of specialization to ensure appropriate services to students.
- Assure compliance with policies established by federal and state law State Board of Education rules local school board policy and district and department guidelines.
- Perform other duties as may be assigned by the Director/Principal.

Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents students principals and teachers.
- Maintain professional relationships with parents students and colleagues.
- Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.
- Keep informed of and comply with federal state district and school regulations and policies for special education teachers.
- Compile maintain and file all physical and computerized reports records and other documents required.
- Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
- Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
