Plant Operator
Job Summary
SUMMARY
Plant Operator is tasked toduties to install troubleshoot repair and maintain facility equipment and building according to safe predictive and productivemaintenance systems and processes to support the achievement of the sites business goals and the risk associated with mission critical facilities adherence to established processes and risk management practices is important in order to ensure the reliability of operations and achievement of facility uptime objectives. The Plant Operator is responsible for performing work in accordance with processes and procedures complying with internal and external requirements including but not limited to environmental health and safety fire protection and risk management.
KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Operates plant equipment and building systems on rotating shifts nights and or days; observes instruments gauges and computerized operating data; starts up shuts down and adjusts controls on equipment manually and by computer; complies with regulations and standards; inspects operating conditions and reports malfunctions; responds to alarms in operating systems; performs rounds and verifies operating equipment; contribute information regarding procurement of parts and plant supplies.
Updates a shift logs; observes and records instrument gauge and meter readings; performs calculations related to water gas and electricity consumption; prepares reports for management on operational issues or deficiencies.
Investigates reports and takes action on conditions that affect the safety and security of the plant and staff; prepares reports; performs housekeeping duties provides a team work safety watch
Performs work in accordance to established processes and risk management practices to ensure achievement of facility uptime objectives and to mitigate risks
Complies with all internal and external requirements including but not limited to environmental health and safety fire protection and risk management
The work does not require substantive supervision but will include coaching and reviewing the work of new employees and contractors performing work within the plant or systems
Has custody of and is responsible for a range of heating plant equipment and systems. These include: a diesel electric generator computer systems that control the plant or facility instruments and gauges controls to regulate plant output the plant distribution system oil and gas fired high pressure boilers combustion chambers firing equipment water pumps valves expansion joints fans hand and power tools and water samples.
The work includes responsibility for a shift log that details plant operating conditions and matters that may affect plant safety and security.
Is required make tours of inspection record observations and to ensure that readings on instruments and gauges comply with regulations operating procedures and occupational health and safety standards.
Interprets information for colleagues clients and supervisors on operational issues deficiencies or changes in normal operations and new equipment; relays verbal instruction as received from supervisors or colleagues regarding inspection and repair.
Troubleshoots to identify mechanical equipment problems. Creativity is required to implement solutions to mechanical breakdowns. The actions performed prevent damage to the plant and equipment increased operating costs and the interruption of service to clients.
25 %Other duties as assigned including Mechanic Generalist.
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
High school diploma plus trades training certificate of qualification and or licensed in one or more of the involuntary trades.
3-5 years of facility operations and maintenance work experience as a Technician/Operator ideally with at least 3 years of critical facility operations and maintenance work experience in environments such as heating cooling plant environment.
Effort is needed to understand and apply established work procedures and prescribed operating methods. Guidance is available in manuals and standard operating procedures. Must understand and follow manufacturer directions and interpret mechanical drawings.
Intellectual effort is required to investigate conditions that may affect the safety and security of the plant and persons in it. Unusual situations are referred to the supervisor.
Must have significant knowledge of the operation of heating and cooling plant equipment and systems. This includes a familiarity with the operating characteristics of boilers chillers generators combustion chambers firing equipment water pumps valves expansion joints fans distribution systems and auxiliary equipment including computer systems. This knowledge is needed to deliver to clients a safe and continuous control of temperature to achieve their specific environmental requirements. The work requires knowledge of testing methods to carry out tests on mechanical and electrically operated equipment and water samples. This knowledge is necessary to assure the reliability of plant equipment and to determine and adjust chemical concentrations in water.
The work requires general knowledge of federal and provincial regulations related to environmental standards and occupational health and safety in plant operations. Strong ability to perform work in a safe and effective manner.
Trade Certification of Electrician Plumber HVAC Millwright or 4th class Engineer will be an asset
WORKING CONDITIONS
Must be able and willing to work 12 hour rotating shifts be available for shift replacement and emergency call-outs as they arise.
Must be willing to wear personal protective equipment.
Must meet security clearance requirements
