Job Summary
We are seeking a motivated and hands-on Data Scientist to join our team within the Laser Business Unit at Coherent Corp. This role is ideal for someone with strong foundations in machine learning and modern AI techniques (including Generative AI and Agentic AI concepts) who enjoys working close to production environments and real-world manufacturing data. Experience in semiconductor laser manufacturing VCSELs and edge emitters is highly desirable.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop train and deploy ML models to support process optimization yield improvement and quality control in semiconductor laser manufacturing.
- Contribute to the development of AI-powered solutions leveraging modern techniques such as:
- Generative AI / Agentic AI workflows
- LLM-assisted analytics
- Build and maintain reproducible ML pipelines using tools such as Databricks MLflow DVC and Azure DevOps.
- Collaborate closely with production engineers process experts and data engineers to translate manufacturing challenges into data-driven solutions.
- Perform feature engineering model validation and statistical analysis on manufacturing and reliability datasets.
- Support integration of AI solutions into production workflows and ensure scalability and robustness.
- Participate in experiment design and validation of predictive models.
- Contribute to documentation version control and CI/CD best practices within the team.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
- Experience in AI machine learning and deep learning including production implementation.
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Python.
- Experience with ML libraries such as (Scikit-learn PyTorch or TensorFlow XGBoost or similar frameworks)
- Experience with data visualization tools like JMP Power BI or Python libraries.
- Experience working with data pipelines and version control tools (e.g. Git)
- Familiarity with modern ML lifecycle tools such as (MLflow Databricks DVC Azure DevOps) or similar CI/CD platforms.
- Understanding of version control systems like Git.
- Understanding of:
- Data preprocessing and feature engineering
- Model evaluation and validation techniques
- Ability to work independently while collaborating in a cross-functional production environment.
- Strong communication skills to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
- Fluency in English is required; German language skills are an advantage but not essential.
Preferred Skills and Qualifications:
- Knowledge or experience in:
- Semiconductor manufacturing
- VCSEL or Edge Emitter lasers
- Photonics and applied physics
- Familiarity with Generative AI concepts and LLM-based applications.
- Experience with SQL and structured data environments.
- Basic understanding of cloud platforms (Azure preferred).
- Knowledge of experiment tracking reproducibility and ML pipeline automation.
- Understanding of statistical analysis and experimental design.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelors or Masters degree in a relevant field (e.g. Computer Science Data Science Physics Material Science or related disciplines) with 1-3 years of experience in data science or a related role with a focus on ML and DL in a production environment.
- Or a PhD in a relevant field (e.g. Computer Science Physics Photonics Material Science or related disciplines) will be considered equivalent to professional experience.
