Job Summary :

Assists in organizing coordinating implementing and supervising activities pertaining to clinical practice of Physical Occupational and Speech Therapy. Acts as a supervisor during the Directors absence as assigned by the director of Physical Occupational and Speech Therapy. Assures the patients physicians and associates needs are met through the effective and efficient supervision of clinical activities in the Physical Occupational and Speech Therapy Department; serves inpatients and outpatients through the timely application of professional therapy agents for accurate and timely reporting of patient progress to the ordering practitioner.

Job Description

Essential Responsibilities:

1. Patient Care
a. Uses common sense and special medical skills to care for the sick or handicapped with regard to the patients age and diagnosis.
b. Provides high quality of patient treatment. This includes evaluation treatment planning and implementation patient/family education and instruction provision of safety procedures and communication with those indicated given the patient (ie. patient family physician other hospital associates etc). Carries through all duties deemed necessary to maintain high level of quality of care and efficiency as defined by department manager. Ages of patients treated range from pediatric to geriatric.
c. Operates equipment related to patient care (ie. ultrasound electrical stimulation units mechanical traction exercise equipment wound care equipment hospital beds etc.).
d. Directs patients in care and use of assistive devices braces orthotics prosthetic exercise equipment and orthopedic devices.
e. Directs and aids patients in mobility and strengthening exercises muscle re-education gait and activities of daily living training and functional training.
f. Adapts conventional physiotherapeutic techniques to meet the need of patients unable to comprehend verbal commands or voluntarily carry out a regimen of therapeutic exercise.
g. Documents patient care following requirements defined by HFAP and departmental policy and procedure.
h. Participates in continuous quality improvement process as it relates to patient care including but not exclusive to evaluation and peer review of patient care quality.
i. Communicates effectively with intra- and interdepartmental associates as it relates to patient care and customer relations.
j. Directs and supervises activities of therapists aides students and volunteers.
k. Assists with departmental functions deemed necessary by Director of Physical Occupational and Speech Therapy.
l. Participates in providing educational material to departmental staff on a rotating basis.
m. Operation of Department & Productivity:
- Assists in planning implementing & supervising activities of department & staff
- Acts as supervisor during Directors absence as assigned by Dept. Director
- Represents Director of intra and interdepartmental affairs or hospital committees as delegates
- Carries through administrative duties to maintain high quality care & efficiency as deemed necessary by administration (Director of Dept). Obtains knowledge of Department Directors duties in order to provide coverage during absence or vacation.
n. Maintenance & Safety:
- Assists in maintaining department & equipment at safe level of operation
o. Records - keeping:
- Assists Director in program & documentation of Quality Assurance and Improvement
- Assists in maintaining & updating departmental records including daily & monthly reports patient records inventory procedural manual and other records as required
p. Equipment:
- Assists director in determining department needs re: equipment supplies etc & completes requisitions for such items.
q. Education:
- Supervises and helps in the planning & implementation of educational programs continuing education and inservicing intra & interdepartmental associates on subjects regarding therapy related subjects fitness and preventative health care.
r. Assists in evaluation departmental associates via the utilization of performance review. All disciplinary actions/salary adjustments will remain in the department with Directors final decision.
s. Maintains skills knowledge and expertise current through attendance with continuing education.
2. Administration
a. Plans implements and supervises activities of staff.
b. Acts as supervisor of clinic/department assigned to per Department Director.
c. Represents Director of Physical Occupational and Speech Therapy in public relations committee and education affairs as delegated.
d. Assists Director of Physical Occupational and Speech Therapy in determining needs regarding staff equipment and supplies etc. and requisitions such items of assigned department/clinic.
e. Maintains department and equipment at safe level of operation and requisitions repairs as deemed necessary.
f. Assists with planning and implementation of educational/staff development programs for PT/OT/ST therapy staff interdepartmental hospital staff patients and public relations.
g. Prepares and maintains departmental records for monthly reports policies procedures as directed by Physical Occupational and Speech Therapy Director of assigned clinic/department.
h. Assists in performing Associate Performance Evaluation for staff directly supervising. The Physical Occupational and Speech Therapy Director reserves right to make decision related to salary increases and disciplinary actions.

Education and Experience Required:

Graduate from Physical Occupational or Speech Therapy school or program approved & accredited respective American Physical Therapy Association American Occupational Therapy Association and American Speech-Language-Hearing Association Department of Education Standards for Accreditation of Education Programs for Physical Occupational and Speech Therapists as most recent publication. Continuing education courses pertinent to clinical practice and professional responsibilities or as requested by Department Director. Active participation in the Physical/Occupational/Speech Therapy Associations on the local State and national levels as deemed necessary by department director. Requires minimum Bachelor of Science degree. Must have 2 years clinical experience as a therapist. Remain in full-time associate status when employed primarily at Hendricks Regional Health or a minimum of part-time associate scheduled to work a minimum of 60 hours per pay period when employed primary at a satellite clinic of Hendricks Regional Health.

Mandatory Licensure/Certifications:

1. Must have licensure or eligibility for licensure in the State of Indiana.

2. Certified CPR required.
