Job Summary
Position Summary:
The Surgical Tech Student supports the surgical team by learning and performing basic supervised tasks within the operating room environment. Working under the direct guidance of a precepting Surgical Technologist and the circulating RN the student assists with preparing supplies maintaining sterile fields and supporting assigned patient care activities. This role is designed to build foundational technical skills reinforce proper sterile technique and develop an understanding of surgical workflow within a structured supportive learning environment. Through hands-on training close supervision and active participation the Surgical Tech Student contributes to efficient case preparation while developing competence in core surgical support functions.

Physical Requirements:
The Surgical Tech Student is frequently required to stand for extended periods move throughout the surgical suite and assist with basic tasks involving equipment and supply handling. The role may involve lifting pushing or maneuvering instrument trays carts and other items used in surgical preparation. Adequate vision hearing and manual dexterity are needed to handle instruments follow verbal instructions and support safe participation in sterile procedures.
Environmental Requirements:
This position functions in a busy surgical environment with exposure to bright lighting bodily fluids cleaning chemicals and medical equipment. The student may encounter fast-paced or stressful situations requiring calm attentive responses under supervision. Consistent adherence to infection-prevention practices sterile technique and appropriate PPE use is essential to maintain safety for both patients and staff.

Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in preparing operating rooms by gathering supplies opening sterile items under supervision and helping organize equipment for upcoming procedures.
- Support the surgical team by performing delegated tasks such as passing instruments positioning equipment and maintaining a clean and orderly work area.
- Practice and reinforce sterile technique instrument handling and safety protocols under direct supervision to ensure consistent and safe patient care.
- Help perform count procedures basic documentation and equipment checks alongside the precepting Surgical Tech or circulating RN.
- Communicate effectively with the surgical team seeking guidance as needed and demonstrating attentive proactive learning behavior.
- Participate in training activities skills validation and on-the-job learning to build proficiency in foundational surgical technology practices.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
- None
Educational Requirements:
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
Experience Requirements:
- Preferred past work experience but not required.
Special Skills or Training Requirements:
- Communicates well with others handles stressful situations well and works as an efficient member of the team.
- Completes probation period satisfactorily.
