Job Summary

Overview

The Botanical Center Technician (Landscaper II) supports the daily operations maintenance and care of the Utah State University Botanical Center. Working under the direction of the Manager this position performs hands-on landscaping horticultural and groundskeeping tasks and provides guidance to volunteers and seasonal employees. The role contributes to maintaining high-quality public spaces and supporting the mission of USU Extension.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out landscaping horticultural and groundskeeping tasks under the direction of the Manager.
  • Assist with coordinating and guiding volunteers and docents in garden maintenance.
  • Train and support seasonal employees in routine landscaping and groundskeeping tasks.
  • Plant maintain and care for trees shrubs flower beds and other plant materials.
  • Install maintain and repair irrigation systems.
  • Apply pesticides and fertilizers in accordance with regulations and safety standards.
  • Operate landscape maintenance equipment including mowers trimmers and related tools.
  • Perform snow removal on sidewalks and driveways as needed.
  • Collaborate with staff to maintain the Botanical Center in a professional and safe manner.
  • Participate in committees or activities that support Extension and the Botanical Center.
  • Perform other operational job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associates degree in horticulture landscape or related field.
  • Experience working at a Botanical Garden/Center.
  • Working knowledge of Dynascape or similar software.
  • Experience operating landscape maintenance equipment.
  • Experience working with volunteers and docents.
  • Licensed pesticide applicator.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Four years experience working at a Botanical Garden/Center.
  • Two years of experience at a Botanical Garden/Center.
  • Experience training or guiding seasonal employees.
  • Experience teaching adults in a garden setting.
  • Experience working with the public.
  • Knowledge of irrigation systems.
  • Experience operating heavy machinery.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of plant materials horticultural practices and landscape maintenance techniques.
  • Knowledge of irrigation systems installation and repair.
  • Familiarity with plant inventory and curation procedures.
  • Working knowledge of Dynascape or similar landscape design software.
  • Ability to perform routine manual labor in various weather conditions.
  • Ability to apply pesticides and fertilizers safely and in compliance with regulations.
  • Ability to operate and maintain landscape equipment such as mowers trimmers and hand tools.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for working with volunteers docents and the public.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written formats.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.

This position requires considerable physical activity. Employees must have sufficient strength to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position including heavy lifting and/or pushing and pulling of heavy objects. Employees must be prepared to assume uncomfortable positions such as crawling kneeling and squatting. Employees work outside and will not be protected from weather conditions including extreme cold and extreme heat for extended periods.

Employees are exposed to hazardous conditions including noise vibrations from machinery moving mechanical parts moving vehicles electrical current exposure to chemicals elevated work spaces such as scaffolding and atmospheric conditions that can affect the respiratory system such as fumes odors dusts mists gases and poor ventilation.
