Under moderate supervision the Research Assistant II supports laboratory research and operations by conducting experiments processing human biospecimens and maintaining laboratory infrastructure and records in accordance with established protocols. The position provides technical and operational support for ongoing research projects including data collection and documentation equipment operation and maintenance protocol maintenance and coordination of laboratory and biorepository activities..
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Ensure the laboratory is prepared for experiments including maintaining sterile conditions preparing reagents and confirming availability and organization of common supplies.
Maintain laboratory stocks and order supplies equipment and software in compliance with VUMC purchasing requirements including receipt and inventory tracking.
Process human blood and biospecimens and assist with management of biorepository storage including routine monitoring of liquid nitrogen levels and coordination of refills.
Maintain freezer logs liquid nitrogen inventories biorepository records and other laboratory inventories.
Assist with the preparation organization and maintenance of IRB protocols study records regulatory documentation and participant compensation for research visits
Assist with laboratory compliance with institutional biosafety and chemical safety including maintaining required training and certifications.
Prepare operate troubleshoot and assist with maintenance of laboratory equipment used in experimental procedures in accordance with manufacturer and VUMC guidelines including coordinating service and calibration as needed.
Under moderate supervision conduct and evaluate experiments and assays in support of ongoing research projects including cell culture flow cytometry and molecular assays.
Perform calculations involving molarity percent solutions and serial dilutions.
Read understand and follow experimental protocols standard operating procedures and equipment manuals.
Record compile interpret and communicate experimental data and results including providing appropriate written documentation of experiments.
Prepare preliminary research summaries and assist with figures data organization and materials for laboratory meetings presentations and publications.
Participate in laboratory meetings and collaborative research activities.
Recognize technical experimental or workflow issues suggest solutions and assist with protocol or process improvements as directed.
Assist with logistics related to external collaborations including material transfer agreements biospecimen shipping and associated documentation.
