POSITION SUMMARY:
The High School Choral Music Educator is responsible for leading a comprehensive choral program for students in grades 9-12 utilizing state and national standards to foster artistic excellence. This educator ensures that students engage in the high-level appreciation creation and performance of choral music through rigorous vocal technique music literacy and diverse addition to classroom instruction this educator directs public performances oversees extracurricular ensembles and serves as a leader in the schools performing arts department to enhance the cultural life of the school community.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Instructional Excellence: Teaches advanced skills in vocal performance music theory and choral literature to students in grades 9-12 in alignment with secondary state and national standards.
- Program Planning: Plans and executes a balanced performance calendar organizing rehearsal time to ensure technical proficiency and artistic expression in all ensembles.
- Individualized Growth: Provides individual and small group coaching to adapt the curriculum to diverse skill levels. Encourages students to pursue collegiate-level musical skills and participation in district regional and all-state honors choirs.
- Repertoire Selection: Utilizes a diverse and sophisticated repertoire of choral literaturespanning various historical periods languages and contemporary genresappropriate for the technical development and cultural enrichment of high school students.
- Asset Management: Maintains responsibility for the choral library uniforms/robes pianos and sound equipment to ensure longevity and organization.
- Assessment: Evaluates individual musical growth and literacy. Assesses each students contribution to the ensembles collective performance and stage presence.
- Vertical Alignment: Collaborates with middle school and elementary music educators to ensure a seamless K-12 recruitment and retention pipeline.
- Effectively demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions.
- Experience working directly with individuals and families from diverse racial ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Familiarity with equity and inclusion frameworks. Models non-discriminatory practices in all activities. Respects the worth dignity and individual differences of others.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to present to diverse audiences to foster professional relationships and express and/or exchange ideas.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in the use of a variety of office/instructional equipment and technology with experience using Microsoft Office Google Workspace and email.
- Demonstrated leadership qualities and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students teachers administrators and the community.
OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATES/LICENSES:
- Bachelors degree in Music Education with an emphasis in Choral Music.
- Holds an appropriate Virginia Teaching License (PreK-12 Music) or is eligible for licensure.
- First Aid and CPR certification.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Directing and Conducting: Oversees all aspects of choral productions from casting and vocal health to technical coordination and stage design.
- Community Engagement: Coordinates with the building principal and community partners to provide musical programs including seasonal concerts graduation ceremonies festivals and community outreach events.
- Collaboration: Works with colleagues in the Performing Arts department to integrate choral music into interdisciplinary projects such as musical theater productions or school-wide showcases.
- Communication: Maintains professional communication with parents boosters and school staff regarding student progress and departmental needs.
- Takes all industry standard precautions to protect students staff equipment materials and facilities.
- Maintains appropriate state licensure; assumes responsibility for and participates in staff development (professional growth) and training to keep materials supplies and skills up-to-date.
- Follows appropriate safety procedures and properly maintains equipment.
- Actively participates in and attends all required meetings.
- Maintains confidentiality when appropriate.
- Complies with and supports school division policies regulations procedures and the HCPS Strategic Plan.
- Effectively performs other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Light work lifting up to 25 pounds occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently. Regular travel throughout the school and effectively interact with students staff and community members. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work and observing general surroundings and activities; and subject to inside and outside environmental conditions. Regular contact with staff members and students is required. Not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
