Job Summary

The Department of Family Medicine at Care New England a major clinical affiliate of the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University seeks an accomplished researcher to serve as Associate Chair of Research. The department runs the Family Medicine clerkship for Brown and operates the Brown Family Medicine Residency Programthe only Family Medicine residency in Rhode Islandtraining 48 residents across two sites. We also offer Global Health and Diabetology Fellowships.

Our research portfolio spans global health cardiometabolic clinical trials and epidemiology and mixed methods research. We are developing a center focused on informatics and learning from electronic medical records data using causal inference methods. Brown University holds the contract for the Annals of Family Medicine providing unique opportunities for scholarly collaboration.

The Vice Chair will lead the research division develop research strategy mentor faculty and trainees oversee the Clinical Trials Unit and maintain an active externally funded research program. This position reports directly to the Chair of Family Medicine.

Major Responsibilities

  • Research Leadership and Administration (20%)
  • Lead the research division and provide strategic direction for all departmental research initiatives
  • Supervise department research staff including coordinators data analysts and administrative personnel
  • Oversee the Clinical Trials Unit ensuring regulatory compliance and operational excellence
  • Represent the department on research committees within Care New England and Brown University
  • Manage the research budget and ensure compliance with IRB data security and ethics standards
  • Mentorship Faculty Development and Grant Writing (20%)
  • Mentor junior researchers inluding faculty fellows residents and students in research methodology and grant writing
  • Support faculty in developing competitive grant applications for federal state and foundation funding
  • Foster collaborative research partnerships within the department and across institutions
  • Develop research training programs and establish metrics for evaluating research productivity
  • Apply for and secure competitive grant funding from federal agencies (NIH AHRQ HRSA CDC PCORI) and foundations
  • Scholarly Activity and External Funding
  • Maintain an active externally funded research program in Family Medicine-relevant areas
  • Publish in major peer-reviewed original research journals including Family Medicine journals such as Annals of Family Medicine JABFM and Family Medicine
  • Present at national Family Medicine conferences (NAPCRG STFM AAFP)
  • Participate in peer review for journals and grant funding agencies

Required Qualifications

  • MD DO PhD or equivalent doctoral degree from an accredited institution
  • For MD/DO with clinical responsibilities: Family Medicine residency ABFM board certification RI license (or eligibility)
  • Eligible for Brown University faculty appointment at Associate Professor or Professor rank
  • Demonstrated track record of federally funded research in Family Medicine or related health services research
  • Minimum 5 years conducting independent research with sustained external funding
  • Proven experience mentoring junior faculty fellows and trainees in research
  • Record of publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Experience with research administration and program leadership

Knowledge Skills & Abilities:

  • Expert knowledge of research methodologies including quantitative qualitative and mixed methods approaches
  • Strong understanding of federal grant mechanisms and compliance requirements
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Strong leadership and team management abilities
  • Commitment to fostering a diverse equitable and inclusive research environment

Preferred Qualifications

    • Current or recent NIH or other federal research funding as Principal Investigator
    • Experience leading clinical trials or serving as site PI for multi-center studies
    • Expertise in clinical informatics causal inference methods or electronic medical records data analysis
    • Experience with community-engaged research or practice-based research networks
    • National recognition as a thought leader in Family Medicine research
    • Established network of collaborators in Family Medicine research
