TITLE: Middle School Administrative Intern
QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Must be a certified teacher with a minimum of 5 years
teaching experience.
- Must have completed all coursework in an administrative certification program.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Highly organized with extensive knowledge of the learning process.
REPORTS TO: Hannibal Middle School Principal
JOB GOAL: To learn from practical experience the skills as well as the problems pertinent to making the transition from teaching to administration.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assume under close supervision responsibilities at the building and district level including but not limited to:
- Assist the Principal and Assistant Principal in supervising the operation of the total school program in the assigned building.
- Serve as the Assistant Principal in their absence.
- Collaborate with the Principal and Assistant Principal concerning the school districts administrative procedures and program of instruction.
- Assist the Principal in reviewing curriculum to ensure alignment with state standards and district expectations.
- Assist the Principal in supporting vertical and horizontal alignment across grade levels and content areas
- Work cooperatively with the Principal in assisting with differentiating instruction for diverse learners.
- Assist the Principal in helping identify trends in student performance across content areas and subgroups.
- Assist the Principal and Assistant Principal in preparing or supervising the preparation of reports records lists and any and all other paperwork required by the schools administration.
- Assist the Principal and Assistant Principal in supporting implementation of new curriculum initiatives or programs.
- Assist the Principal in evaluating the instructional program in a systematic manner and use the results by working with the faculty to plan program improvements.
- Assist the Principal and Assistant Principal in organizing grade-level or departmental faculty meetings which are effective in implementing and improving curriculum and instruction.
- Assist the Principal and Assistant Principal in supporting family communication related to curriculum and academic expectations.
- Assist the Principal and Assistant Principal in improving classroom instruction student/teacher rapport discipline attitudes and relationships.
- Stay informed on current trends and research in middle school education.
- Assume responsibility for supervising student conduct and enforcing discipline in accordance with the districts discipline policies and procedures and the due process and rights of students.
- Assume responsibility for maintaining accurate and complete student discipline records and ensuring adequate confidentiality.
- Assist the Principal and Assistant Principal in the preparation of the teacher handbook and student handbook.
- Assist the Principal and Assistant Principal in providing adequate administrative supervision for all special events including events to recognize student achievement after-school activities clubs functions athletic events etc.
- Assist the Principal and Assistant Principal in serving as the liaison between the school district and the community interpreting activities and policies of the school encouraging community participation in school-related activities.
- Perform any and all other duties as designated by the Principal Assistant Principal Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent.
ADMINISTRATIVE INTERN PROGRAM:
The Hannibal School District #60 supports a training program for prospective school administrators in hope of benefiting this school district the participating intern and education in general.
The scope of the program will evolve as the participant successfully undertakes a series of administrative tasks under the supervision of a principal or other administrator. Statutory regulations time and competency exhibited by an intern will establish the program limits.
To be considered for an administrative internship an applicant must have demonstrated the interest and potential to fulfill the role of school administrator. The applicant must have a minimum of five (5) years of teaching experience and have completed the coursework needed to successfully obtain administrative certification.
The intern will be placed on the administrators salary schedule and work 185 days per year.
The Superintendent shall recommend to the Board of Education the prospective administrative intern. Each intern will submit a report on the program to the program supervisor and to the Superintendent. This report will include the interns evaluation of the program and an assessment of his/her participation.
Participation in the program will not restrict the freedom of the intern to accept a position in another school district nor will it imply that the intern will necessarily be appointed to an administrative post within the Hannibal School District.
Effective schools require effective leadership; therefore administrators must possess the recognized qualities of effective leadership consisting of a strong knowledge base and a broad range of administrative experience.
Nationwide more and more experienced administrators both in the principalship and district level are nearing retirement age. Consequently it is anticipated that there will be a greater demand than there will be highly qualified candidates to assume these key leadership roles.
- OBJECTIVES:
- The administrative internship program will enable talented teachers/specialists to:
- Explore their motivation and interest in pursuing career development in administration.
- Extend beyond their graduate coursework or degree in administration through practical experiences.
- Develop and demonstrate their administrative talent to provide career options both within and outside the district.
- The administrative internship program will enable the district to:
- Utilize the talents and enthusiasms of outstanding teachers/specialists as they assist in the administration of the school or district programs.
- Provide excellent training programs and practical experience for aspiring administrators.
- Develop a source of talented administrators who become seasoned and capable of assuming key administrative roles either in the district or outside.
- PROVISIONS FOR DEVELOPING AN ADMINISTRATIVE INTERNSHIP POSITION
The district provides opportunities for the development of administrative positions.
- An administrative internship position may be created at the school or district level to alleviate a unique and temporary need for administrative assistance above and beyond the existing permanent administrative staff for the school or district.
- An administrative internship position may be established for a school as a result of enrollments that necessitate administrative assistance.
- An administrative intern would provide a ready replacement for a district or building administrator who is absent for short or long term basis.
- GUIDELINES AND DEFINITIONS OF THE ADMINISTRATIVE INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
- Superintendent Approval
The Superintendent of Schools will approve the existence of all administrative internship positions.
- Supervision
The building principal and/or central office administrator will serve as the primary mentor supervisor and evaluators of the administrative interns.
- Evaluation
The administrative intern will work as part of the administrative team and will be evaluated according to the administrator performance based evaluation system.
- Orientation
Prior to beginning the internship an orientation will be provided for the intern and supervisor. Some of the information to be covered shall include the following: school and community policies school law operations and procedures duties and responsibilities goals/objectives of the district building routines handbooks schedules and other related topics.
- Internship Experiences
A portfolio of experiences and responsibilities will be developed by the immediate supervisor within two weeks of appointment to an intern position. The supervisor should consider the interns experiences education professional goals and expectations for the internship activity.

- Updated resume
- Log of activities artifacts major accomplishments and in-service experiences.
- Intern performance-based evaluation.
- Leadership development plan.
- SUMMARY ANNUAL REVIEW OF THE ADMINISTRATIVE INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
Annually the intern will receive a summary review of internship activities and performance. The building principal will engage in the following activities:
- Meet with the intern to review the portfolio consisting of activities responsibilities and evaluations of the intern.
- Discuss future employment options.
- EVALUATION OF THE ADMINISTRATIVE INTERN PROGRAM
An evaluation plan will be developed and implemented by the Superintendent of Schools.
EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be based on the boards policy on evaluation.
