Job Title: Outdoor Pursuits Educator

Reports to: Director of College and Career Readiness

GENERAL PURPOSE

The Outdoor Pursuits Educator will design lead and support engaging outdoor education instruction and experiences that promote student growth physical wellness environmental awareness and leadership skills. This position provides hands-on experience-based learning opportunities through activities such as hiking team building outdoor skills development environmental studies and experiential field programs. The educator will work collaboratively with school staff community partners and program supervisors to deliver safe inclusive and developmentally appropriate outdoor learning experiences for Springfield Public Schools students.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Plan develop and deliver high-quality outdoor education instruction aligned with district learning goals and state standards.
  • Facilitate outdoor experiences such as nature exploration orienteering outdoor challenges environmental science experiments and recreation activities.
  • Promote safety and risk management by implementing established protocols supervising students closely and teaching safety skills.
  • Support the design and implementation of field experiences day trips and outdoor excursions.
  • Collaborate with teachers administrators and support staff to integrate outdoor learning into existing curriculum when applicable.
  • Serve as a role model for positive behavior teamwork environmental stewardship and responsible decision-making.
  • Maintain and manage program equipment supplies and outdoor learning spaces.
  • Provide clear communication to families staff and students regarding expectations schedules and program opportunities.
  • Participate in professional learning staff meetings and required district trainings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

Education and Experience

  • Bachelors Degree from an accredited college or university required.
  • Job-related experience with increasing levels of responsibility is required.
  • Must pass a Criminal Background Clearance the result of which must be satisfactory to the District is required.

Certificates Licenses and Other Special Requirements

  • Possession of a Missouri 9-12 Teaching certification required

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of basic math including calculations using fractions percentages and/or ratios; read technical information compose a variety of documents and/or facilitate group discussions; and analyze situations to define issues draw conclusions and create action plans.
  • Knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include appropriate codes policies regulations and/or laws; age appropriate activities; lesson plan requirements; stages of child development; and behavioral management strategies.
  • Knowledge of Environmental science and outdoor pursuits.
  • Understanding of basic tools materials and safety practices used in outdoor activities.
  • Skill to perform multiple technical tasks with a need to routinely upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job including: applying assessment instruments; operating standard office equipment including using pertinent software applications; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.
  • Strong understanding of outdoor education principles environmental literacy and experiential learning practices.
  • Ability to lead diverse groups of students in outdoor settings with enthusiasm patience and cultural responsiveness.
  • Skill in managing group dynamics facilitating collaboration and promoting positive student engagement.
  • Ability to assess risk exercise sound judgment and respond effectively to emergencies.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Comfort with physical activity and working in varied outdoor conditions.
  • Ability to schedule a number of activities meetings and/or events; gather collate and/or classify data; and use job-related equipment.
  • Ability to work with others under a wide variety of circumstances; working with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using defined methods.
  • Ability to work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with data of widely varied types and/or purposes; and utilize job-related equipment.
  • Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to apply critical thinking/problem solving to improve work processes.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

  • Frequent outdoor work in varied weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift and carry equipment up to 40 lbs.
  • Extended periods of walking standing and leading physical activity.
  • Must possess the physical ability to work primarily with fingers perceive the nature of sounds make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes express or exchange ideas by the spoken word substantial movements (motions) with the hands wrists and/or fingers and discern letters or numbers at a given distance.
  • Additionally the following physical abilities are required: crouching grasping handling hearing kneeling manual dexterity mental acuity repetitive motion speaking standing talking visual acuity and walking.
  • Occasional evening or weekend hours for special programs or events.
