This is a fully remote role for candidates who are based outside of the New York Metropolitan area. For those located in the area we encourage you to consider our hybrid work arrangement (1-2 days a week in our NYC office). The Senior Project Engineer I is responsible for technical compliance on renewable energy projects including large-scale complex Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and solar PV systems 5MW and larger. This role involves engineering functional ownership and oversight of the technical deliverables during the execution/construction phase of a project.
This position will be a part of the operations function under the project engineering department and serve as the key technical resource on the construction project team.
This is an individual contributor role and therefore does not have any direct reports but will exercise informal mentorship and guidance to junior level staff.
What Youll Do
Project Execution (75%)
oPerform technical evaluation and selection of Owners engineering services.
oLead utility regulatory and AHJ interface during construction.
oPerform detailed engineering design analysis reviews and issue approvals on third-party design deliverables.
oSupport interconnection and permitting processes with technical documentation and interfacing with Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs) during project construction.
oPerform factory and project site visits as needed in support of project construction activities.
oLead quality assurance / quality control (QA/QC) process to ensure that project is delivered in accordance to project specifications for system design equipment and field implementation.
oProvide technical guidance during site acceptance testing and commissioning.
Technical Oversight (10%)
oDevelop specifications and perform technical evaluations to support final selection of BESS/PV technology and major equipment.
oEnsure engineering design compliance with industry codes and standards.
oProvide functional subject matter expertise to project team e.g core proficiency in transmission-level design codes and standards BESS technology PV design power systems protection and relaying etc.
oProvide technical input to engineering design standards as requested.
Collaboration (10%)
oWork cross-functionally to contribute to improvement for existing processes and support implementation of approved methods tools and best practices for the execution of safe quality and high-performance projects.
oProvide effective communication of project performance to stakeholders using appropriate presentation tools.
oCollaborate with junior engineering team members by sharing knowledge and providing feedback when requested.
Continuous Learning (5%)
oActive participation in technical workshops webinars and publications.
oOngoing engagement in professional development opportunities.
Required Qualifications
oBachelors degree in electrical engineering civil/structural engineering or a related technical field.
oMinimum of 7 years of experience in design engineering with a focus on medium and low voltage power systems design.
o5 years professional experience in BESS/PV design development and/or construction.
oDemonstrated competency in BESS inverter and PV technology their safety systems/standards and commercial applications.
oProficiency in power system analysis specifically system design equipment specifications and utility standards for medium voltage (distribution) and high voltage (transmission) level projects.
oStrong proficiency in one or more engineering specializations with strong understanding of design principles and renewable project applications.
oStrong proficiency with AutoCAD and MS-Office suite.
oCore understanding of power system modeling tools (e.g. ETAP SKM).
oComprehensive understanding and application of NEC/NESC code.
oComprehensive understanding and application of industry codes and standards such as NFPA 855 UL 9540 UL9540A UL1973 UL1642 UL1741 etc.
oAbility to apply critical thinking and lessons learned to design optimization.
oAdvanced troubleshooting skills for addressing project challenges.
oCommercial awareness relating to contract compliance cost control and relative value of engineering solutions.
oExcellent ability to document and present technical findings to stakeholders.
oEffective interpersonal skills to work with internal teams and external stakeholders including customers.
oAbility to manage and deliver multiple projects with competing priorities.
oHigh level of accuracy in design and documentation to ensure quality outcomes.
oSelf-driven towards professional growth and development.

oAs applicable this role may involve physical activity including but not limited to standing walking or lifting up to 50 lbs.
o20% travel expected primarily to prospective sites project locations customer vendor visits and for team events and company-wide meetings. Travel to remote sites may be required which could involve driving or air travel.
Preferred Qualifications
oAdvanced degree in electrical engineering or a related field.
oTransmission substation or high voltage infrastructure design experience.
oProfessional Engineering (PE) license or equivalent certification.
