Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role

Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington is currently recruiting a Data Architect to join the Digital Transformation team within Te Tai Matihiko Digital Solutions on a fixed-term full-time contract until 17 December 2027. This role offers flexibility with hybrid working arrangements available.

As Data Architect you will analyse design and model the organisations data in support of the Data Reporting & Analytics Project a major project within the Universitys Digital Roadmap.

Key responsibilities:

  • Define and determine a data modelling strategy in support of the Universitys Data Reporting & Analytics Blueprint.
  • Enable and embed data governance practices including metadata management data quality controls stewardship and data lifecycle management.
  • Produce and maintain conceptual logical and physical data models aligned to institutional needs.
  • Establish common domains definitions and models for key entities (e.g. student course enrolment staff research output).
  • Partner with business owners and SMEs to resolve data definitions semantics and usage rules.
  • Lead architecture design for data platforms (data warehouse/Lakehouse analytical data stores semantic layers).

You will be a proactive and experienced data architect with strong data modelling skills and a passion for enabling successful project delivery. You thrive in a dynamic environment and can build strong relationships across business and IT.

Key requirements:

  • Strong experience in data architecture data modelling and information management.
  • Expertise in designing data warehouses data lakes and analytical platforms.
  • Experience with cloud data platforms (e.g. Azure AWS or GCP).
  • Strong understanding of data ingestion/ integration ETL/ELT APIs and event-driven architectures.
  • Knowledge of data governance security and privacy principles.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Experience working in complex multi-system environments.
