Job Summary

Primary Purpose:

Supervise and manage the school library/media center. Provide services and resources that allow students to develop skills inlocating evaluating synthesizing and using information to solve problems. Serve as teacher materials expert and curriculum adviser to ensure that library/media center is involved in instructional programs of the school.

Education/Certification:

  1. MastersDegree fromaccreditedcollege or university(for individuals certified after January 23 2001).
  2. Valid Texas librarian or learning resources specialist certificate or endorsement.

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  1. Knowledge of library science.
  2. Ability to instruct and manage student behavior.
  3. Strong organizational communication and interpersonal skills.

Experience/ Other Requirements:

  1. One year of experience inlibrary/media center in apublic schoolsetting is preferred.

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Instruction

  1. Provide group instruction and individual guidance to students to help them locate resources and use research techniques.
  2. Consult teachers onappropriate useof materials and help them schedule materials for classroom instruction.
  3. Serve as informationresourcefor users of library/media center materials andprovide staff development opportunities for teachers on the availability and use of campus and district learning resources.

Library Programs

  1. Effectively planschoollibrary program to meet identified needs.
  2. Assistin preparation ofbibliographiesand curriculum guides.
  3. Manage acquisitions processing organizing distribution maintenance and inventory of resources.
  4. Coordinate development and maintenance of community resourcefile.
  5. Maintain schedules for instructional television programs and encourageuseof video programs for educational purposes.
  6. Create a library/media center environment that is conducive to learning andappropriate tothe maturity level and interests of students.
  7. Useappropriateand effective techniques to encourage community and parent involvement.

Student Management

  1. Carry out disciplinein accordance withboard policies and administrative regulations.
  2. Interact with students to promote positive attitudes towardschoollibrary.

Administration

  1. Compilebudgetand cost estimates based on documented program needs.
  2. Compilemaintain and file all physical and computerized reports records and other documentsrequired.
  3. Comply withfederal and state laws State Board of Education rule and board policy in the library/media services area.
  4. Develop and coordinate a continuing evaluation of the library/media center program and make changes based on the findings.
  5. Comply withall district and campus routines and regulations.

Communication

  1. Maintain a positive and effective relationship with supervisors.
  2. Communicate effectively with colleagues students and parents.
  3. Responsible for properlymaintainingdistrict records adhering to all policies set forth by the district for records maintenanceadlearning the records retention schedule for department records.
  4. Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Supervise assignedstaff members.
